Course Overview
This course will give you a basic insight into bricklaying as a career. It can lead towards further qualifications which include the Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying or an apprenticeship in the industry.
What will I learn?
You will learn all aspects of basic brickwork including mixing mortar, cutting components and laying bricks and blocks. By the end of the year should be able to build a straight brick wall to a good standard!
You will learn about:
Carryout safe working practices in construction
Information, quantities and communicating with others
Building methods and construction technology
Basic block laying skills
Basic bricklaying skills
Basic cavity walling
Setting out and build basic masonry structures up to damp course level
Entry Requirements
4 GCSEs at grade 2/E or above, or equivalent, including Maths and English and a good reference and a satisfactory interview.
You will also be required to undertake a skills assessment.
Study, Assessment and Qualifications
You will need to revise for the end year exam.You will need to pass a number of practical and theoretical assessments and assignments.You will need to pass an end of year multiple choice test.
Additional Costs and Information
Students must supply their own stationary, overalls and safety boots.
What Could I Do Next?
On completion of your course you may choose to progress onto these following courses
On completion of a Level 1 Diploma in Brick work you may be able to progress onto a Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying.Alternatively, if you are successful in gaining course related employment, students can progress onto a brickwork apprenticeship and work towards a Cskills Award: Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations (Construction).A Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying will not guarantee employment within the trade but it can help you gain entry into work-based training with the college and a local builder.
