Every year, Wiltshire College & University Centre welcomes countless Team Leaders or managers from all sectors, who want to progress further and may need to lead their team through organisational change, budget cuts or other pressures.
We caught up with Megan Thomas, Workplace Team Leader for the College, who also owns a small business and has completed the Level 3 ILM Leadership and Management course.
Megan’s family-run business, Bubble Bar Events, is a mobile horse box perfect for events such as weddings, festivals, corporate functions and parties.
Asked why she decided to study the ILM course, Megan said: “I would like to expand my business in the future, with multiple outlets and a much bigger, permanent team compared to the one I have now.
“I’m at the start of my career and don’t have as much experience of managing a team as I feel is necessary to expand my business so felt this course would be ideal. I think that it’s important to always consider where you can progress and gain extra skills and knowledge to take forward.”
One of the benefits of this online course was balancing her work life, studies and social life.
Megan said: “I think the best part about the course is that although you have deadlines for each unit, you can complete them freely and at your own pace. You can pick sections up and save them to come back to later. This makes it much easier to fit around personal and work life, and complete when you have a spare five minutes in your day. The deadlines are realistic and keep you on track to achieving the course in a timely manner.”
Megan also used this course to re-evaluate how she manages her team at the College, how to motivate and get the best from them. It aided her in putting The course aided her in putting together new strategies and business plans and learning invaluable knowledge that will carry her through her future plans.
She now hopes to progress onto another leadership course to become an even more successful, approachable and skilled leader.
