Course Overview


If your favourite chair has had the stuffing knocked out of it over the years and is in need of some tender loving care, then this course is for you. We will show you how to safely use the tools, such as magnetic tack hammers, tack lifters and web stretchers, to bring new life to your upholstered furniture.The course is suitable for those new to upholstery and those with some experience who wish to improve their skills. For those new to this craft we recommend you start with a small project, e.g. dining chair or stool.The Upholstery Workshop is made up of 3 terms of 10 weeks. Students can enrol at any stage, where places are available. Completion of a project will depend on its size and your level of skills and experience.


What will I learn?


You will be shown the basic skills and techniques used for the traditional or
modern methods of upholstery, including removing old materials and selecting
replacement fabrics.

Upon completion of the full course you will be able to:

Identify and use a variety of materials used in upholstery
Use tools and equipment safely
Identify a range of furniture styles
Demonstrate a range of upholstery skills
The following topics will be covered:

Traditional or Modern Upholstery Techniques - using the best method to suit
your project
Basic Repairs - ensuring the frame is sound by filling in holes, re-gluing
joints etc
Correct Handling of Fabrics and Materials - using the correct procedures to
cut, stitch and fix a range of fabrics and materials eg webbing, hessian, animal
hair/coir fibre and wadding
Safe Handling of Tools - including magnetic tack hammers, tack lifters and
ripping chisels
Health and Safety Guidelines

There are no entry
requirements associated with this course.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications


Assessment
is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes, and will
be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor. There are no final qualifications associated with the course.

Additional Costs and Information


Please bring your project to the first session. You are required to purchase the materials necessary to complete your project.

You may be able to purchase hessian, a variety of stuffing materials, tacks and twine from the tutor. Basic upholstery tools are available for you to use during the sessions. At the start of the course you will receive information about tools, materials, basic upholstery techniques, a list of suppliers and a recommended reading list.

Please Note: As storage facilities are unavailable;you are required to take your project home at the end of each session.

Along with your chosen item, please bring scissors, tape measure, notebook and pen/pencil. You may also bring a camera if you wish to record your progress throughout the course.




This is a termly course, meaning it is part of a series of individual courses each lasting 10 weeks.Learners who have completed the first term receive priority over other applicants. The dates by which existing learners must enrol to ensure they can continue to the next course are: 20th November 2020 and 19th March 2021.

After these dates new learners may enrol if there are spaces available on a course. Learners wishing to enrol on all three terms at once may do so by calling 01225 350035.

Please note that this course takes place at the Warminster Park Community Centre, Weymouth Street, Warminster, BA12 9NP where there is limited parking available.
