Course Overview

These weekend workshops are ideal if you are in the process of completing a project and would like some extended tuition time to help you complete your project and develop your upholstery skills. Beginners are also welcome, but depending on the size of the project and your level of experience, you may need to commit to enrolling for additional weekends, please contact the tutor for advice.

What will I learn?

The aim of the course is to enable you to refresh your previously-acquired skills and develop your existing knowledge. On completion, you should be able to: Recognise different upholstery materials/fillings and how to use them Demonstrate you have developed your ability to handle tools and equipment safely Demonstrate you have developed a range of skills used in upholstery. Working with your own piece of furniture and at your own pace, you will cover the following topics during the course: Traditional Upholstery Techniques - the relevant skills and techniques for your piece of furniture Handling Fabrics and Materials Correctly - developing your confidence in cutting, stitching and fixing including such materials as webbing, hessian, scrim, horsehair and cotton waddings. Managing your Project - assessing project requirements, order of work, choice of top-cover, trim etc Health and Safety Guidelines.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor. There is no final qualification associated with this course.

Entry Requirements

You should already possess some upholstery skills and perhaps be starting or in the process of completing a project of your own.

Additional Costs and Information

You will need to bring with you all the material you need to complete your project; some will be available for purchase from the tutor (including webbing, hessian, horsehair, cotton waddings and calico etc) but not top cover material.

You should also bring with you the piece of upholstered furniture on which you wish to work during the workshop as well as scissors, a tape measure and a notebook and pen. You may leave your piece of furniture at the centre during the weekend if you wish.

You may like to record your own progress photographically - if so please bring a camera.

You are advised to undertake a small upholstery project, although more adventurous projects may be undertaken. If you would like advice please contact the tutor through the Adult & Community Learning office on 01225 756289.

Some tools will be available for you to use during the session. Your handout pack will also include information on fabrics and materials, tools and equipment, materials suppliers, basic techniques and a reading list.

Please bring a packed lunch for both days. Facilities for making tea and coffee will be available at a small charge.

Please note that there is no parking at the Methuen Centre, Corsham. The closest car park is in the High Street, adjacent to The Methuen Arms. There is a charge for parking.

This course runs on a Saturday and Sunday over one weekend at the Methuen Centre, Corsham and the dates are:
