Course Overview

Supported Internships is a study programme which works in partnership with Wiltshire Council, who provide the supported employment element of the programme.

The course provides individualised Study Programmes, designed to equip students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities with the skills they need to secure paid employment.

The Supported Internship will match their long-term career aspirations and fit in with their working capabilities, aiming to prepare each person for employment. This can include working interviews, voluntary work, increased social skills, confidence building, certificates and qualifications, short courses outside of college, open days, interview practice, employer visits and travel training.

Progression onto a supported internship will have been a topic of conversation at the young person’s annual review meeting.

More information

The structured Study Programme includes Functional skills English and Maths, preparation for work, and on-the-job training and support for both the Intern and the Employer. Learners will follow an individual programme to meet EHCP outcomes using a RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement) system.

The study programmes are individualised, so will differ for each person. The learner will have the opportunity to continue to develop Maths and English, transferable work skills, and opportunities to practise skills in real life situations and real time (unpaid) work experience with a range of employers.

The Learner will have a Job Coach, who will work alongside them towards the real possibility of paid employment at the end of the Internship.
Supported Internships are for young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities aged 18 to 24.

Learners will have an Education, Health Care Plan (EHCP) and be eligible for High Needs funding through Wiltshire Council.
You will follow an individual programme, including English and Maths at a level which is right for you. We will agree which level is appropriate following an assessment, which you can take either at interview or when your course begins.
You must meet the eligibility criteria for Supported Internships to be short-listed for the programme.

Applications for further additional support can be made through Access to Work funding, and can help pay for the support an individual may need because of their disability or long-term health condition.
