Course Overview

A theory-based qualification to develop the essential understanding needed by anyone employed in professional horticulture or individuals who wish to improve their horticultural knowledge. It provides a firm foundation for those working in the horticultural sector as well as for keen amateur gardeners who wish to extend their technical knowledge.The course can provide a route into employment within professional horticulture and can further support career development for those already employed in the industryThis course forms part of the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.

What will I learn?

This course consists of the following four mandatory units:

Plant classification, structure, and function
Plant nutrition and the root environment
Maintaining plant health
Understanding plant propagation

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course; however, you are expected to have an underpinning knowledge of horticulture prior to enrolling, either from employment in the industry or through experience of gardening privately.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

Each unit will be assessed by a separate written examination covering all learning outcomes specified in the unit. Examinations will be offered in February 2020.

You will find it beneficial to spend some time preparing for the unit examinations through self-study. The subject tutors will recommend underpinning reading that will assist with this.

Additional Costs and Information

Specialist facilities on campus include horticultural/machinery workshops, several glasshouses, polythene tunnels and a Zoological Garden. There are landscaped grounds with a wide range of plants, trees and shrubs, also a walled garden containing a varied collection of ornamental and edible plants.

There is a comprehensive Library and Learning Resource Centre with computing facilities, internet access and e-study (also accessible from home), available to you to support personal study and course work.
