Course Overview

This is a 12 week course which aims to improve your English level to reach a sufficiently high standard to gain entrance to British universities. It is also used by some employers and professional registration bodies which require proof of English language skills as part of their recruitment or admission procedures.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to skim and scan authentic reading texts, guess the meaning of new words in context and understand the nuances of a text.

There will be tuition in how to write shirt timed essays and reports and extensive work on improving listening and speaking skills in preparation for the IELTS exam.

In addition, you will improve your study skills and knowledge of formal, academic-style English vocabulary in line with the entry requirements of British universities.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

You will need to be able to study at home for a minimum of 5 hours per week. Course work will be assessed and feedback about your progress will be given at regular intervals throughout the 12-week course.

Practice mock IELTS exams will be held in addition to regular practice tests in order to measure your level of English in all the four skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. At the end of the course you wil be informed of your approximate current level of IELTS in all 4 skill areas. Then you should be ready to take your full IELTS exam at a registered IELTS centre.

Please note that you cannot take the full IELTS exam at Wiltshire College & University Centre. However, we can help you to book an exam at a nearby test centre such as Southampton, Bournemouth or Bath.

Entry Requirements

You should have a minimum of Level 1 ESOL Skills for Life or Cambridge English or equivalent (Level B2).

You will have to attend an interview with one of the ESOL teaching team and complete an initial assessment at a satisfactory level before being accepted on to the course.

Additional Costs and Information

The IELTS exam fee is payable on taking the exam at a provider institution. Please note that Wiltshire College & University Centre is not a recognised centre for this test.

You should be prepared for an intensive class study and should have an English dictionary with you in class. You will also need to bring a file, pens and paper to each class.

Course Fees and dates:

This 12 week course costss £220.

Classes run on Thursday evenings from 6-8pm, with a total of 24 hours of classroom study, plus 5 hours of self-study at home or in the library every week.

This course will help you gain access to higher education institutions across Britain. It will help you professionally as proof of a high level of English for future employment purposes in the UK and abroad.You may also wish to carry on improving your English language skills at the College by progressing onto a Level 2 ESOL Skills for Life course or a GCSE English course.
