Course Overview

Do you have a passion for land, wildlife and animals, and would love to work in the land-based sector? This course will develop both your practical knowledge and your independent learning, life and work skills. You’ll gain the understanding and confidence you’ll need to thrive in a learning or work environment, helping you to decide on the next stage of your education or career. The course is based at Lackham, our specialist campus for land-based studies with a wide range of industry-standard facilities.

What will I learn?

The course will be tailored to your individual needs, but may cover topics such as:
• Building and maintaining workplace relationships
• Health and safety in the workplace
• Principles of animal care
• Assisting in the handling and care of animals

You will also study English and maths at a level that is right for you following an assessment either at interview or at the start of the course. You will work towards a GCSE or Functional Skills qualification.

We will help you to develop your personal, social and employability skills, and you will learn how to operate independently and effectively in life, learning and work.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

You will develop work-related and vocational skills through a combination of classroom lessons and practical activities in real-work or simulated environments.

Your studies and assessment are within the framework of a flexible accredited Progression qualification, Skills in Working in Animal Care/Horticulture at Level 1.

Entry Requirements

Usual entry requirements are 4 GCSEs at grade 1 or 2 or equivalent experience, but entry is determined on an individualised basis and subject to an interview.

Additional Costs and Information

Your course is likely to include trips to attractions and community facilities which will require you to contribute towards the cost. In addition, you may require special safety equipment or uniform for some work experience options. You may be eligible for financial help from the College to help meet these costs.
