The construction industry is one of the largest and broadest to work in, employing around 7% of the UKs workforce, and there is always a demand for skilled professionals, whether that's developing hospitals or housing estates.Carpenters need to have a good eye for detail, strong maths skills and the ability to follow instructions and technical drawings.

What will I learn?

Apprenticeships in Advanced Site Carpentry will give you the theoretical knowledge you need to succeed in the industry, the practical skills to produce work to a high standard, and an understanding of health and safety, materials and sustainability.

This apprenticeship will cover the following units:

• Install complex and non-standard doors and window frames, shaped door and hatch linings, partitions with openings and changes of direction and staircases with turns.
• Install accessible service encasements, bespoke wall/ floor units and fitments, panelling and stair components (e.g. balustrades, handrails and spindles to staircases with turns).
• Erect inclined roofs with gables, roof verges and eaves, including finishings, joists and roof coverings, dormers and features.
• Repair and or replace frames, mouldings, floor or flat roof joist coverings, door and window ironmongery, window components, structural joists and rafters, window components, guttering and downpipes

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

The duration of an advanced apprenticeship in Advanced Carpentry is 18 months.

This apprenticeship is a day release programme where you will be required to attend college for one day a week for the duration of the apprenticeship.

The competence element will be assessed in the workplace using evidence to build a portfolio and the knowledge element is delivered at Wiltshire College Trowbridge campus. You will also take an external practical (EPA) assessment at the end of your apprenticeship to test your knowledge and skills learnt during the 18 months.

If required, Functional Skills will also be delivered as a block week for both Maths and English.

Entry Requirements

You will need to have completed a level 2 Carpentry apprenticeship.

Minimum grades 4/C or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths.

All applicants will be required to pass initial assessments in Maths, English and ICT.

Your employer must be able to provide the full scope of work required for the apprenticeship.

To assist you during your apprenticeship, you may be required to purchase some equipment and resources to support you during your course.
