Course Overview


Almost everyone visits hair salons, barbers, or has a hairdresser who visits them at home. Hairdressers are always learning, whether it's cutting techniques, new styles or on trend colours, and an apprenticeship is the perfect way to learn these skills in the industry. Duties can include booking appointments and working on reception, ordering and arranging stock, styling hair for events, cutting new styles and colouring.Most hairdressers work in salons, but there could be opportunities in day spas or country retreats, on cruise liners or holiday resorts. You could even land a role working in the glamorous world of TV and Film, providing services to celebrities and travelling around the world. The Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing aims to provide you with a range of specialist practical skills and technical knowledge which will equip you to seek employment or further training within the hairdressing industry.


What will I learn?


This qualification covers a very wide range of practical skills and knowledge required for working in the hairdressing industry. Apprentices will learn how to cut hair using a combination of techniques, creatively colour and lighten hair, colour correction and hairdressing consultation services and how to creatively style and dress hair. Students will cut men’s hair using basic techniques and learn about creative hair design skills, creative hair extension services, smoothing and strengthening systems, create a variety of perming effects, hair relaxing services and specialist hair and scalp treatments.

Entry Requirements


To enrol on this course, you must have successfully completed a Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing or, equivalent industry experience is a recommended entry requirement. Work experience in the Hairdressing industry is essential for Level 3. Your application will need to be supported by a reference from your tutor, good record of attendance and an interview.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications


To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve one externally set, externally moderated practical assignment and one externally set, externally marked theory exam. Apprentices will also be expected to complete six hours home study per week.

An Industry Placement is a fundamental part of this course. An Industry Placement gives you the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience for your future. You will be supported throughout your placement by our dedicated Work Placement Team

You will be assessed working on clients in the Aspire Academy of Hair & Beauty salons throughout the duration of the course.

Additional Costs and Information


A kit and uniform will be required (discussed at interview) In cases of financial hardship funds may be available to help with the cost of this.

We also arrange educational activities and competitions as part of the course which may incur an additional cost.

Advanced Apprenticeships in Hairdressing usually takes between 10 and 18 months to complete, although the actual duration will depend on your job role and previous experience. You will usually need to attend college for one day per week during term time, with occasional workshops during the half terms and holidays. To assist you during your apprenticeship, you may be required to purchase some equipment and resources to support you during your course.
