Course Overview


This course is aimed at those who would like a career in the hospitality industry and enjoy exploring various ways of cooking. The Culinary Skills qualifications can help you become a chef or progress to a more senior chef's role. You'll gain a high standard of cookery skills and have the option to learn other workplace essentials like health and safety in a kitchen.The Culinary Skills qualifications are for anyone who works or wants to work as a chef in the catering and hospitality sector. It is ideal for learners coming straight from school who wish to seek a career in this industry. It is also ideal for those chefs in industry who would like to continue or refresh their knowledge by undertaking topics within the qualification

What will I learn?


Students will complete the following units:

· Food Safety
· Basic food preparation and cooking
· Introduction to personal workplace skills
· Health and safety and food safety awareness in catering
· Introduction to kitchen equipment
· Applying for jobs and courses
· Preparing for work placement
· Investigating rights and responsibilities at work
· Learning from work placement
· Serving food and drink
· Basic food preparation

Entry Requirements


To enrol you must have 4 GCSEs at E (2) or above or equivalent (to include maths and English).

Your application will need to be supported by a reference, good record of attendance and an interview.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications


You will be assessed in the College's Restaurant for practical assessments whilst also completing theory based assignments.

Work experience is an essential part of your course and you will be expected to complete 30 hours in an industry related placement. This will give you hands-on practical experience of working in the industry.

Final qualification: Level 1 Certificate in Introduction to Culinary Skills (QCF)

Additional Costs and Information


You will need a uniform and a kit for this course (discussed at interview)

In cases of financial hardship funds may be available to help with the cost of this.
We also arrange educational activities and competitions as part of the course which may incur an additional cost.

You will be able to take home some food items at a small charge.
