Course Overview

This practical, hands-on course provides a great introduction to the motor industry, enabling you to develop a basic knowledge and understanding of motor vehicles and help you improve your maths and English in a practical environment. You will learn how a modern motor vehicle works and develop knowledge about hand skills, engineering methods and the use of automotive equipment, preparing you to work in the industry. Lessons will take place in the classroom and in our fully equipped motor vehicle workshops. The course requires you to spend three days a week at the College.

What will I learn?

You will develop basic skills in key areas of automotive maintenance and repair through an introduction to the following areas:

• Automotive foundation skills
• Industry expectation for health and safety
• Engine systems
• Chassis systems (brakes, suspension, steering and wheels/tyres)
• Transmissions and drivelines
• Electrical components
• Employability skills

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

You will be assessed through workshop-based practical assignments and knowledge-based questions, as well as taking one online exam. You will use an E-portfolio to complete your formal work and track your progress.

The course is accredited by the Institute of Motor Industries (IMI). On successful completion of this course, you will achieve an IMI Entry Level 3 Diploma for The Introduction to Motor Vehicle Industry and Technologies.

Entry Requirements

• 4 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above, including English and maths.

Additional Costs and Information

You will need to supply your own protective clothing (overalls and steel toecap safety boots) and stationery.
