Course Overview


The course is aimed at any photographer who is competent at creating interesting images but would like a clearer direction on where to take their work.Through a series of lectures, assignments and critical assessments, the course will give you freedom to find your own style and direction in photography whilst consolidating both your technical and artistic understanding of what makes a good photograph.At the end of the year you will have acquired an ‘applied’ knowledge of photographic production and post production to create your own portfolio of work.. You will also exhibit your work at an end of year show.On completion of the course you should be able to: Produce a portfolio of images; Contribute to an end of year show/exhibition; Have a better understanding of digital workflow and colour management.

What will I learn?


The three blocks of 10 sessions will cover (although not specifically in this order):
1. Production - Image taking and existing knowledge: Composition and interpretation; Workflow and organisation; Using colour balance creatively; Understanding why raw data is important; Studio lighting; Exploring 'dynamic range' and exposure control; Using multiple speedlights; Shooting for a purpose or to a brief.
2. Post Production and contextualising your work: Review of workflow and organisation; Lightroom - setup and using raw data; Photoshop - set up and using raw data; Trouble shooting images; Studying the work of other photographers; Digital printing and colour control.
3. Presentation skills and Portfolio development: Exhibition Theme; Personal Targets; RPS - Typical Panels (outside lecturer); Presentation - fit for purpose - exhibition or commercial audiences or higher education; Printing your exhibition.

Entry Requirements


Please note that for terms 2 and 3 of this course, you have to have completed the previous terms.

This course is suitable for students who:
Have sound/strong knowledge of photography and photographic image making
Want to prepare for an exhibition or commercial portfolio
Want to develop their existing skills and knowledge of photography and develop a personalised style to image taking, processing and printing
Want to prepare for a higher education qualification in photography but have been out of academic study for a while

Study, Assessment and Qualifications


Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course lecturer. There are no final qualifications associated with this course.

Additional Costs and Information


You should bring with you:

A portable external hard drive (not a USB stick) formatted in xFAT
Your enthusiasm and imagination
You will be expected to either have a ‘Flickr’ photography account or be prepared to open one to facilitate group discussion of your work (instructions on how to open such an account will be given)

Note: Each 10 week block of learning will be assessed through class work assignments ‘homework' tasks and group based critical reviews.
