Amey donation helps students develop industry-ready skills

STUDENTS at Wiltshire College & University Centre’s Lackham campus are gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment thanks to the donation of two forklift trucks from infrastructure and engineering company Amey.

The forklifts have been donated to support teaching and learning within the College’s Land based Engineering department, giving students and apprentices the opportunity to develop practical maintenance, servicing and diagnostic skills using equipment commonly found in the workplace.

The donation builds on a long-standing relationship between Amey and the College, which has been training the company’s apprentices for almost 20 years. Alongside the forklifts, Amey has also donated engines and other equipment to support student learning.

The new machinery will enable students to gain experience using modern electronic diagnostic systems, helping them build the technical skills increasingly required by employers across the engineering and plant industries.

Peter Brunt, Lecturer in Land based Engineering, said: “Having access to industry-standard equipment is essential for our students. These forklifts allow learners to develop the diagnostic and servicing skills they’ll use in the workplace, while gaining experience with the same technology used by employers across the industry.

“As technology continues to evolve, it’s important that students are working with modern equipment that reflects what they’ll encounter in their future careers.”

Among the students benefiting from the donation is 19-year-old Land-based Engineering apprentice Hayden Murdin, who is employed by Amey. Hayden said the additional equipment gives students access to a wider range of machinery and learning opportunities, helping ensure everyone can gain valuable practical experience alongside their studies.

Ed Newman, who leads training within Amey Defence Equipment, said supporting apprenticeships and technical education was vital for the future of the industry.

“Our workforce is ageing and we need young people coming through with the skills and experience to build the future of the sector. Supporting colleges and apprenticeships is an important part of that, and we’re pleased to be able to contribute equipment that will help students develop those skills.”

He added that the partnership between Amey and Wiltshire College & University Centre continues to play an important role in developing the next generation of engineers and plant technicians.

The donation forms part of the College’s wider commitment to working closely with employers to ensure students develop the skills, knowledge and experience needed by industry while training on equipment that reflects modern workplace standards.
