New to college? Here’s what our students wish they knew before starting

STARTING college can feel like a big step – exciting, nerve-wracking and full of unknowns. So, before the summer break, we asked our current students what they wish they’d known before starting at Wiltshire College & University Centre.

They didn’t hold back – and we’ve pulled together their top tips to help you feel more prepared, less stressed, and ready to hit the ground running this September.

Advice from real students

1. Don’t be nervous – everyone feels the same

This came up again and again! No one really knows what to expect on day one, and that’s totally normal. As one student put it:

“It’s not that deep – you’re surrounded by people who feel the same.”

So, take a deep breath, smile, and know you’re not alone.

2. Be yourself and do what you love

College is a fresh start. You’ve chosen a course because it interests you – now lean into that.

“Focus on your work and choose the course that you enjoy,” one student advised.

3. Get to your lessons – and be on time

This might sound obvious, but it’s easy to underestimate how important attendance is.

“Going to lessons and showing up on time will help you get onto courses in the future,” said one student.

Also – you’ll feel more confident, connected, and caught up.

4. Work out your travel and timings early

Missed buses, delayed trains, wrong turn at the roundabout… it happens.

Plan your route before your first day and give yourself extra time while you get used to the routine.

“I wish I knew how early it would start,” said one student, who wasn’t great at waking up in the mornings.

5. Ask questions – seriously, ask!

Whether it’s about your course, your timetable, or just where the vending machines are, don’t be afraid to speak up. Everyone’s here to help.

“There’s loads of support if you need it,” said one student. “You just have to ask.”

6. Get your head down and get the work done

Another popular top tip from students:

“Get the work done, and get it done on time,” one student said simply.

Staying on top of deadlines early on helps reduce stress later.

7. Be open-minded and get involved

One of our favourite quotes: “Be open-minded, get stuck in, meet people, have a good time, enjoy it.”

College is what you make of it – chat to new people, be brave, and say yes to opportunities.

8. Respect your tutors

“Don’t be on the bad side of teachers,” advised one student.

Your tutors are here to help you succeed – meet them halfway with good communication, effort, and respect.

9. You’ll find your people

It might take a few days or weeks, but you will find friends who get you.

“Everyone is really friendly,” said one student.

10. Don’t skip enrolment

This is more our tip than it is the students’ – but attending enrolment is essential.

It’s where you confirm your place, get your ID badge, and find out key info before term starts. Don’t miss it!

One last thing…

Starting college is the beginning of something new – and it’s okay to feel unsure at first. Keep asking questions, stay open, and don’t forget to enjoy yourself along the way.

We can’t wait to welcome you to Wiltshire College & University Centre this September!
