EQUESTRIAN student Summer Turnbull has been recognised nationally for her outstanding contribution to the community after being named Young Volunteer of the Year 2025 by the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA).
The 16-year-old, from Westbury, is currently in her first year of the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care at Wiltshire College & University Centre’s Lackham campus. She received the prestigious award honouring her dedication, compassion, and commitment to supporting others.
“I’m still in shock to have received this award,” said Summer. “I really wasn’t expecting to be nominated, let alone win. To find out I had won is a huge honour – I’m incredibly grateful.”
Summer began volunteering with the RDA Saxon Group in Bradford on Avon in 2021, after first joining the organisation as a rider in 2019. The RDA helped her grow in confidence not only as a rider, but in everyday life – building the skills to work with new people and believe in herself.
Inspired by the support she received, she decided to give back to the charity that helped shape her love for horses.
“I started volunteering because I wanted to give back to the riders what my coach and the other volunteers gave to me,” she said.
As a volunteer, Summer supports weekly riding sessions by leading and side-walking with riders, tacking up horses in the barn, and assisting during horse care sessions. She also attends RDA shows, helping to prepare horses and support riders throughout their classes.
“Volunteering at the RDA really supports my college work – it helps me get out into the equine industry, speak to different people, and gain more hands-on experience,” she added.
While Summer completes her college work experience hours at the RDA, she also volunteers regularly in her own time – a testament to her passion, generosity, and strong work ethic.
The RDA’s Young Volunteer of the Year is a national award that recognises the exceptional contributions made by volunteers under the age of 18 who go above and beyond to make a difference.
Equestrian lecturer Ria McLean praised Summer’s achievement and the impact she’s had on both the college and the wider community.
“Summer is a true role model,” said Ria. “Her enthusiasm and kindness have left a lasting impact on the riders and everyone around her. This award is a well-deserved recognition of her inspiring efforts, and we are incredibly proud of her.”
The RDA support 25,000 disabled children and adults across the UK. They bring life-changing programmes to help improve mobility, boost physical health and mental wellbeing, build confidence, and teach new skills – all with the help of over 13,000 volunteers.
