Director of governance
The role of the Director of Governance is to provide impartial advice to the governing body so that decisions align with legal and regulatory frameworks. The Director acts independently of the executive team, and reports directly to the Chair of Governors, which ensures decisions that risk breaching regulations or ethical standards can be challenged.
Key responsibilities
- Advise governors on statutory duties, regulatory compliance and governance best practice.
- Ensure adherence to the college’s Instrument and Articles of Government, charity law and other relevant legislation.
- Promote integrity and transparency in governance processes, safeguarding against conflicts of interest.
- Support effective meetings, accurate minutes and timely information flow between the Board and senior leadership team.
- Help shape governance strategy, board development and risk management, ensuring the college meets its long-term objectives responsibly.
The Director of Governance at Wiltshire College & University Centre also has responsibility as Director of Compliance, overseeing data protection and freedom of information. In this capacity, they report to the Principal/CEO.

Jana Murray
Jana is passionate about FE governance and ensuring everything the College does is transparent and accountable, and in the best interests of learners and the local community. She works closely with the governing body and senior leadership team on regulations and best practice, while supporting a culture of integrity and continuous improvement.
Previously Jana was a school governance advisor at Hampshire County Council, where she coached and mentored governing bodies facing challenges, delivered an expansive training programme and led communications for the governance team. She has been a governor in two primary schools where roles included Chair of Governors, Chair of the Headteacher Performance Management Panel, finance lead and safeguarding link.
Prior to working in governance, Jana was a television and video producer and managed her own production company for over a decade, giving her a strong foundation in strategic thinking, finance and risk management.
