What is CEIAG?
CEIAG stands for Careers Education, Information, Advice, and Guidance. It has been increasingly recognised as a crucial part of a young person’s education since the North East Gatsby Pilot (2016-2019) showed that quality CEIAG has a positive impact on student outcomes. Since then, it is now a statutory requirement for all educational institutions, including Wiltshire College, to provide CEIAG.
In layman’s terms, CEIAG is about providing education and information to students so that they understand the world of careers and are able to make informed decisions. Additional, impartial and confidential advice and guidance must be provided (usually in the form of careers advice appointments). This has been shown to increase attainment and attitudes to learning.
However, most importantly, a student who receives quality CEIAG is a student that will be able to make informed decisions and live a healthy and fulfilling life instead of floating between jobs without a strong direction. Our vision for CEIAG at Wiltshire College is simple; every young person should receive careers education, information, advice, and guidance that leads the way in best practice, enabling them to live their best lives with as much control of their potential as possible. Missed opportunities and wasted years should be minimised and equality upheld.
Supporting Young People
As a parent, carer, or guardian, there are three main things you can do to help.
Encourage them to use and learn from Labour Market Information. This can be anything from using a job board (like the ones linked below), to reading the news, or getting them to talk directly with employers. If they want to work in sport, give them a nudge to contact the local football team’s staff and ask how they got into their jobs! You can also do your part by showing them job postings that are relevant and talking through things like the qualifications and experience needed for the roles.
Get your young person to take ownership of their career learning. A school, college, or university can only do so much to support each student, so push your young person to research the industries they are interested in, proactively seek out work experience, and to keep an eye on labour trends by monitoring job boards and other sources of Labour Marketing Information, such as the news or government LMI reports (such as the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Economic Assessment 2022).
Finally, support your young person to have more than one plan. Career preparation isn’t about having a single plan, but knowing how to navigate unexpected setbacks, overcoming hurdles, and adapting to the changing economy. A young person who puts all their eggs into basket, only learning about and preparing to become a journalist, for example, is ill-prepared for the possibility that they might not become a journalist.
