WILTSHIRE College & University Centre has launched a new Higher National Diploma (HND) in Sustainable Business Management for 2026, designed to equip learners with the skills needed to lead responsible, resilient organisations.
The course forms part of our refreshed Higher Education offer for 2026, developed in line with employer demand and future workforce needs.
We caught up with Martin Chappell, Lecturer in Business, about what makes the course unique and why it’s an exciting new addition.
What makes the Sustainable Business Management course unique?
Sustainability is placed at the heart of this course, rather than being treated as an optional topic. From the very start, students study sustainability, ethics and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles alongside core business and management skills.
Delivered as a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ), the course has been designed around employer standards and includes hands-on learning, live projects and close collaboration with industry.
Why was the course introduced for 2026?
Employers increasingly need people who can balance strong business performance with sustainability, ethical governance and ESG responsibilities. There is a clear skills gap in this area, and this course has been introduced to respond directly to those emerging needs.
The programme also aligns with the College’s wider sustainability strategy and investment in green skills and facilities.
Why is sustainability now essential in business education?
Businesses today face increasing pressure from regulation, consumers, investors and environmental challenges. Sustainability is no longer optional – it is becoming central to how organisations operate, manage risk and plan for the future.
This course prepares learners to understand climate risk, responsible leadership and long-term resilience, giving them skills that are increasingly valuable across all sectors.
What key topics will students explore?
Students study a wide range of topics, including:
- Sustainability principles
- Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Principles
- Corporate governance and ethics
- Change management
- Leadership
- Operational planning
- Project management
- Corporate social responsibility (CSR) event management
- Budgeting
- Research methods
- Organisational behaviour
Together, these areas provide a strong foundation in business while keeping sustainability at the core.

How does the course balance academic learning with practical experience?
Delivery is blended, combining classroom-based learning with remote study. This flexible approach allows students to engage with case studies, applied assignments and realistic business scenarios.
Employer involvement, guest speakers and live briefs bring real-world challenges into the course, ensuring learning remains practical, relevant and closely linked to industry expectations.
What careers or progression routes does the course support?
Graduates may progress into roles such as sustainability or ESG officer, CSR roles, project management, business administration, consultancy, or positions within non-profits, social enterprises or the public sector.
The qualification also supports progression to a Level 6 top-up degree in areas such as business management, sustainability or leadership.
Who is this course best suited to?
The course is ideal for learners motivated by environmental and social issues who enjoy practical, applied learning. It is particularly suited to students progressing from T Levels, A Levels or BTEC Level 3 qualifications, as well as adult learners who want to study alongside paid employment.
What excited you most about this programme?
Seeing students develop into confident professionals who can influence positive environmental and social change through business is a key highlight. The course offers learners the opportunity to build meaningful careers with purpose.
