What will I learn?
Core Skills and Knowledge
– Film Camera Fundamentals
– Identify and confidently use the key components of 35mm format film cameras
– Understand the differences between film and digital photography in terms of workflow, equipment, and aesthetic outcomes
– Load, meter, and operate a range of manual and semi-automatic film cameras
– Photographic Composition and Exposure
– Apply core compositional techniques such as framing, the rule of thirds, leading lines, and balance
– Experiment with portraits, still life, and location-based photography
– Explore exposure, including how to use available light and flash creatively
– Develop an eye for texture, tone, and spatial relationships in monochrome imagery, how colour relates to tone.
Darkroom Processes
– Learn how to process black-and-white film using traditional chemical methods
– Make contact sheets and test strips to evaluate exposures and select frames for printing
– Use enlargers confidently to create prints from negatives on resin-coated paper
– Understand contrast control using filters and paper types
– Creative Techniques in Printmaking
– Experiment with photograms, solarisation
– Explore alternative darkroom techniques such as dodging, burning, toning, and re-spotting prints
– Learn to troubleshoot common issues in developing and printing for greater creative control
– Portfolio Development and Visual Literacy
– Curate and edit your images to produce a small but refined personal portfolio
– Engage in peer critique and tutor-led feedback to build confidence and visual awareness
– Real-World Film Practice
– Prepare effectively for film shoots, manage exposure settings manually, and consider film stock choice
– Understand how different film formats behave in terms of grain, sharpness, and tonal range

Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor.
