Course Overview

The course has a range of progressive pathways most suitable for each learner across our Chippenham, Lackham, Salisbury and Trowbridge campuses. More details about the pathways can be found under the ‘Study, Assessment and Qualifications’ section below. On our Pathways course, every learner will have a personal tutor who supports and guides them throughout their time on the programme in achieving their aspirations. Learner will study Maths & English and have access to staff who are experienced in working with young people with social, emotional and mental health difficulties, as well as moderate and/or specific learning difficulties.

A pathway offered at our Lackham campus is the Introduction to Land Based course. This is designed to enable students to acquire meaningful qualifications, skills and experience, to enable them to progress into further study, apprenticeships, or employment. Most students will already have a passion for their chosen vocational area (Agriculture, Animal Care or Horticulture/Countryside).

The curriculum has been designed with employers, who are able to support with enriching the curriculum, so learners gain the most up to date knowledge from industry, including transferable skills such as problem solving, resilience, communication and working as part of a team.

To support learners into further study at Level 1 and Level 2. The list of skills developed to underpin the curriculum are as follows:

Communication

· Writing, speaking and listening to others.
· Using body language to help communication.
· Using communication for different purposes.
· Communicating in a varety of ways, including electronic and social media.

Working with others

· Setting common goals.
· Showing respect for others in the team and valuing their contributions.
· Listening to others in the team, being open minded.
· Taking on roles and responsibilities.

Problem solving

· Identifying issues by being able to examine information.
· Dealing with change.
· Decision making to find solutions.
· Staying with a problem until it is resolved.
· Using IT to help solve problems.

Managing and presenting information

· Collecting and using information.
· Organising information.
· Representing information in different ways.
· Using IT to present and store information

Self-management and development

· Setting goals and planning ahead.
· Being (proactive and) flexible.
· Being resilient and able to work under pressure.
· Monitoring performance and devising strategies for improvement.
· Using IT for time management.

Work Experience

Learners will take part in a college to work unit, which will inspire learners to understand a variety of different careers options, helping them make informed decisions early on. Throughout the unit learners will take part in project work, visiting employers gaining key experience from industry. Learners will also be supported with key resources such as CV writing, personal statements, cover letters and career development plans.
No formal entry requirements are needed for this level of study. All learners are considered on an individual basis at interview and matched to a course that is best placed to meet their needs and support them towards achieving their aspirations.
All units will be internally assessed, tasks will vary in nature with all content designed to develop all the skills necessary to progress onto the next stage of learning.

This course is the first step in preparing you for the world of work. Through practical, hands-on learning, you’ll develop the confidence, skills, and experience needed to succeed in your chosen vocational area. You’ll take part in real tasks, build strong routines, and grow key employability skills such as communication, teamwork, following instructions, and staying safe in a work environment. Whether you’re interested in construction, catering, hair and beauty, automotive, or another sector, this course helps you understand what’s expected in the workplace and how to meet those expectations. It also supports your personal development, helping you become more confident, capable, and ready to take your next steps, whether that’s moving onto a higher-level course, supported internship, or starting your first job. With guidance, support, and encouragement, you’ll learn to see your potential and begin to build a future that works for you.

Employment/Vocational Study Pathways to Land Based – Lackham

Pathways to Land Based is the beginning of a hands-on, practical journey for learners who are passionate about working with animals and want to build skills for the world of work. Through this course, you will develop confidence, independence, and key employability skills such as teamwork, communication, following routines, and taking responsibility. You’ll gain experience in handling and caring for a range of animals, understanding health and safety, and completing real workplace tasks- all essential for future progression. Whether you’re interested in working in kennels, farms, rescue centres, grooming salons or pet shops, this course prepares you for vocational training, supported internships, or entry-level roles in the animal care sector. You’ll also grow holistically, learning to be confident, capable, and community-minded, with a clear understanding of your next steps and how to achieve them.
