Course Overview

The purpose of this apprenticeship is to provide specialist technical support for engineers so that organisations can develop, produce or test new and existing products, processes, or procedures to meet a customer specification in terms of quality, cost and delivery, as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Engineering Manufacturing Technicians will make decisions, solve problems and produce and where applicable, update technical documentation, reports or specifications covering areas such as quality, reliability, production schedules and targets, costing or other technical documentation that informs others, either internally or externally what needs to be done such as how a product must be designed, manufactured, tested, modified, maintained, stored, transported, commissioned or decommissioned.

Engineering Manufacturing Technicians can be office based, manufacturing or plant based or more commonly combination of both, working with engineering or manufacturing teams at an operational level such as with production team leaders or management level working with specialist quality or design engineers.

More information

College attendance will focus the first 2 years of this 3 year programme on the HNC (Higher National Certificate in Engineering) delivered one day per week over 2 years.

In line with the role in the business, candidates and employers can select a Mechanical or Electrical/Electronic pathway.
Units are assignment based and cover the following:

Both Pathways – 4001 Engineering Design, 4002 Engineering Maths, 4004 Managing a Professional Engineering Project, 4014 Production Engineering for Manufacture and 4017 Quality and Process Improvement.

Plus

Mechanical Pathway – 4008 Mechanical Principles, 4011 Fluid Mechanics and 4013 Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines

Or

Electrical/Electronic Pathway – 4015 Automation, Robotics and Programmable Logic Controllers, 4019 Electrical and Electronic Principles and 4021 Electrical Machines

In addition and with the support of your employer further skills training will take place in the workplace.

To view the full set of knowledge, skills and behaviours that need to be acquired to complete the End Point assessment please Google ‘Engineering manufacturing technician Skills England’.
Due to the Apprenticeship Standard requiring achievement of a Level 4 HNC qualification, candidates will need to hold similar entry criteria to Higher Education Programmes. This includes a minimum of:

– At least 4 GCSEs at grade C (4) or above including English and Maths

And

– A Level 3 Engineering specific “knowledge” qualification such as a BTEC National Diploma or T Level

Or

– 2 x A Levels in related subjects such as Maths or Physics

In the absence of a Level 3 Diploma or A Levels, candidates with a number of years of industry experience may be considered, following a Maths and English aptitude test and course interview.

Employers will also need to be reviewed for suitability to ensure course criteria can be met in the work place and the working role
For the HNC you will need to attend the first 2 years one day per week during term time at our Chippenham Campus. The HNC is assignment based and weekly research and further self study is to be expected outside of college hours.
You will also be required to ensure you track your work based training accordingly and build a portfolio if evidence for the Eng Point Assessment.

A college Assessor will be allocated to support you and review your progress every 8 weeks to ensure all knowledge and skills are covered and you remain on track for completion.
There are no initial additional costs other than personal study requirements. Your employer will provide you with any necessary PPE for the job role.
