Course Overview

This two-year part-time course leads to the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4) awarded by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). This award offers coherent, vocational and professional counselling training, highlighting the development of skilled practice via experiential learning. You will gain specific training to help you to become a counsellor within an agency, with the opportunity to learn a range of counselling theories and approaches

More information

Our core theoretical approach in this training is an Integrative model. This is widely supported by a growing literature, and integrates humanistic, psychodynamic, and transpersonal theories that invite students to view the self from differing perspectives, and develop appropriate qualities and skills for responding to presenting issues, underlying history and psychological structures. The core of our model is relationally based and rests upon the therapists capacity to be both fully present in therapeutic meeting and rigorously reflective about its significance. Essential to this holistic approach are: The healing quality of relating, supported by the latest research findings from neuroscience. Attention to the client’s current goals, needs and resources. The therapeutic need for empathic attunement. Inclusion of a body-based awareness. Working with both explicit and implicit layers to self and self with other. Relating to historical patterns in personal history. A view of self that includes personally identified aspects of soul and spirit. Recognition of the inter-subjective of therapeutic work and the co-creating nature of relationship
You should have successfully completed a Level 2 Counselling Skills course and a Level 3 Counselling Studies course, show an openness to challenges and demonstrate maturity in your ability to reflect on your thoughts, behaviours and feelings. All candidates will be interviewed, and we will follow up references with previous tutors. Applicants should hold GCSE Maths and English at grade C, or equivalent qualifications. Please note that counselling courses include personal development activities that involve you talking about some of your personal experience in the group. For this reason we advise people in close relationship not to attend the same training group. (If you need further guidance on this, please speak to the tutor at interview.)
The course is taught one day a week from 9am to 4.30pm at the Trowbridge campus. In addition to the study day, you need to allow at least 1-1.5 days for independent study. Towards the end of year 1 and throughout year 2 you should allow for at least one additional day for placement work and supervision. Throughout this training, there will be a continued emphasis on the development of appropriate skills for a deepening level of work. The level of work on this course is concerned with a person’s recurrent difficulties in terms of patterns in themselves, their personal history and ways of relating. Theoretical and experiential seminars, skills workshops, group process time, group supervision and tutorials will be used to present ideas, practise skills and support personal development. Assessment is by a range of methods, including self and peer-group assessment and will be used to develop ‘good enough’ competence at this level of work. Other methods include personal journals, audio and video work and written assignments including an essay and case studies. As a student at Wiltshire College you will have a tutor with whom you can discuss your academic progress. Students will meet with their tutor as a group, and meet 1 to 1 with their personal tutors at least termly. This helps ensure you make good progress towards your qualification, and lets you discuss issues relating to your academic performance.
Start date above is a rough guide, as timetables are still being finalised.

Personal Counselling/Psychotherapy (30 hours per year) is a requirement. You will need to find a placement in an agency offering one-to-one contracted counselling and achieve a minimum of 100 supervised counselling hours over the two years. Note: You will have to pay for personal counselling and some students may have to pay for supervision on their work placement. As part of the delivery plan for the course here at Wiltshire College, we have built in a weekend residential workshop each year that students are all expected to attend. The cost is not included in the course fee, and will cost around £250.
