Course Overview

If you’d love to start a career in the sports industry, our Level 3 Sport course will give you the insight and expertise required to join the dynamic and diverse sector. This two-year course has been designed to give you the opportunity to equip yourself with the knowledge, skills and understanding to enhance your employment prospects within areas such as Health and Fitness, Sports and Leisure, Sports Coaching and Professional Sport. The course consists of a 90-credit programme at Year 1 after which students will enrol onto Year 2 and complete a full BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, ensuring progression to university level courses, higher apprenticeships or employment. Students may have the opportunity to gain further qualifications such as coaching awards, first aid and fitness instructing. Our practical lessons take place at a range of top facilities across the county, including Five Rivers Leisure Centre, Melksham Town Football Club, Stanley Park Football Club, Springfield, Beversbrook Football Facility, Play Football Indoor Dome Swindon and CrossFit Civitas.

As part of the course, you will be required to complete the following mandatory units:

• Fitness Training and Programming
• Sports Coaching
• Sports Development
• Fitness Testing for Sport Exercise
• Practical Team Sports

You will also have an opportunity to choose from the following optional units as part of your course:

• Practical Individual Sport
• Sports Nutrition
• Current Issues in Sport
• Exercise, Health and Lifestyle
• Psychology for Sports Performance
• Sports Injuries
• Analysis of Sports Performance
• Talent Identification and Development in Sport
• Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport
• Organising Sports Events
• Work Experience in Sport

This course is made up of 18 units (180 credits) studied over two years just like an A Level programme and is equivalent to 3 A Levels.
4 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including English Language and Maths, or equivalent.

Assessment is primarily by portfolio building but will include some practical assessments and presentations. There is a substantial amount of theory which is backed up by practical pathways.

Students are provided with extensive support from lecturers as well as from an Academic Advisor, in order to complete their assessments. They may also have workshop allocated time in which to plan and complete assessed activities. Students may be requested to complete additional work at home from time to time, however they are asked to use college time effectively.

The ‘Learning Resource Centre’ is available to enhance research and studying and electronic resources are available online.
An Industry Placement is a fundamental part of this course and gives you the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience for your future. You will be supported throughout your placement by our dedicated Work Placement Team.

You will be provided with additional information and guidance at interview, enrolment and during induction. The College will assist you in finding suitable placement opportunities in the industry and will support you throughout.
A charge of approximately £350 will be required for off-site visits, equipment and uniform. Financial assistance may be available for students who qualify. Students should contact Customer Services at the College for further details and a bursary application form.

Students who leave the course after successfully completing Year 1 with a BTEC 90 Credit Diploma (which is equivalent to 1 ½ A levels) can use this qualification to support progression into employment or further training.
