Course Overview

This course is a natural progression if you have completed a Level 1 course in Carpentry/Joinery, or if you are completing an NVQ2 in Site Carpentry as the two qualifications can be gained together. On this course you will develop specialist carpentry techniques needed to become a successful professional site carpenter and improve your knowledge of health and safety in the industry. You will learn about the first fixing components such as floors and roofs, second fix components such as skirting and architrave, and carcassing components such as stairs. You will also discover how to maintain non-structural components. You will learn in a specialist construction training environment using industry-standard equipment and be taught by tutors with extensive experience in the trade. (If you have not previously studied on the Level 1 course and want to go directly to Level 2, you will need to cover some units from Level 1. This course focuses on site carpentry rather than joinery).

More information

You will study eight units during the course, enabling you to develop the following skills and knowledge:

• Carry out first fixing operations
• Carry out maintenance to non-structural carpentry work
• Carry out second fixing operations
• Carry out structural carcassing operations
• Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
• Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
• Understanding construction technology
• Understanding information, quantities and communication with others
To enrol on this course, you must have successfully completed a Level 1 qualification in Carpentry or have gained equivalent industry experience; and
have GCSE Grade 3 or above in English and Maths, or equivalent.

A successful interview.
You will be continuously assessed through practical and theory tests after each phase of training, and eight unit-based external assessment knowledge tests, timed throughout the year. You will take an extended timed practical test at the end of the course.

You may be given theory tasks as homework and will be expected to catch up with your theory work in your own time following an absence.

The final qualification is a Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry.
You will need to buy a standard course textbook (approximately £25) and will also be required to supply your own basic tool kit, which we will discuss with you at your interview.
