Course Overview

The Horticulture and Landscape Operative apprenticeship is suitable for roles across industry including maintenance of community spaces and private gardens, food and plant growing and production, maintaining wildlife habitats as well as careers in sustainability and biodiversity. Employers may be charities, commercial businesses or governmental organisations and range in size from micro businesses through to large employers.

A range of knowledge, skills and behaviours are required from learners to prepare for your End Point Assessment (EPA) to complete this apprenticeship which include:

• Maintenance and implementation of soft/hard landscape features.
• Maintain plant health, soil cultivation, plant identification.
• Operating and maintaining tools, equipment and machinery. Comply with biosecurity and invasive species legislation, industry guidance and organisational policies.
• Complying with health and safety legislation.
• Communicating with supervisor, colleagues, public and others.

Horticulture pathway
• Seed sowing and methods of propagation and pruning.
• Using hand held power tools considering the environmental conditions affecting development of plants.

Landscape pathway
• Prepare site for landscape construction activities including measuring and setting out site.
• Construct hard landscape surfaces, structures and features for example paths, patios, decking.
• Assess and repair hard structures or taking other appropriate action.
Apprentices who do not hold Maths & English L1 or GSCE grades 2 (E) will need to complete these prior to completion of the apprenticeship programme (Gateway).

You must have secured a position with an employer and be ready to start working with them before you can begin your apprenticeship course.

The Horticulture and Landscape Operative Apprenticeship programme is delivered one day a week at our Lackham campus during term time only and in the workplace with a visit from your Assessor every 10 to 12 weeks.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, you’ll need to record a minimum of 6 hours per week ‘off-the-job’ training time. This can include work shadowing, training, workshops, online learning, tutor sessions, revision, webinars, industry visits – anything that supports your learning on the apprenticeship and supported by your dedicated assessor.

This programme is assessed by a number of practical assessments, including observations and professional discussions in the workplace, to generate evidence for your portfolio in preparation for EPA. In addition, a tutor will arrange college lessons covering both theory and practical learning as required throughout the programme.

On successful completion of the Horticulture and Landscape Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship you will hold the qualification of the Apprenticeship Standard plus Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work.
PA1 and PA6 (Horticulture pathway)
Abrasive Wheels Certificate (Landscape pathway)
The duration of this apprenticeship is 21 months.
