Course Overview

Our Higher Technical Qualifications provide a wide-ranging study of Engineering and are designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in this exciting sector. The department’s facilities will enable you to learn using a wide range of industry equipment. A large, dedicated workshop houses a range of state-of-the-art resources. In our engineering labs you’ll build experience with electrical CAD systems and software, programmable logic controllers, pneumatic and hydraulic rigs and a range of electronic, robotic and mechatronic facilities.

Units covered over two years:


– Unit 4001: Engineering Design (Core – Mandatory) – 15 credits
– Unit 4002: Engineering Mathematics (Core – Mandatory) – 15 credits
– Unit 4004: Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Specialist – Mandatory) – 15 credits
– Unit 4014: Production Engineering for Manufacture (Specialist – Mandatory) – 15 credits
– Unit 4015: Automation, Robotics and Programmable Logic Controllers (plcs) (Specialist – Mandatory) – 15 credits
– Unit 4019: Electrical and Electronic Principals (Specialist – Mandatory) – 15 credits
– Unit 4021: Electrical Machines (Specialist – Mandatory) – 15 credits
– Unit 4017: Quality and Process Improvement (Specialist Mandatory) – 15 credits
At least 4 GCSEs at grade C (4) or above including English and Maths (or equivalent level 2 qualifications) plus one or more of the following:

– 72 UCAS Tariff Points from an appropriate level 3 vocational programme (e.g. BTEC National Diploma).

– A Level 3 Extended Diploma or GCE AS / A Level or a 6 unit Vocational A Level.

– Success in an Access to Higher Education Diploma.

– Formally assessed outcomes acquired through recognised prior learning or experience.

Applications from mature candidates are welcomed and considered on an individual basis.

Where English is not your first language, an IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent qualification will normally be required.

Applicants without the qualifications specified will be considered based on their ability to study the subject at the required level.
A Higher National Certificate qualification is equivalent to a level 4 university qualification and usually takes two years to complete in full studying part time.

There is continual assessment across the course including written reports, presentations, workshops and a final research project.

During your time on the course, you will be directed to carry out additional reading and other appropriate tasks alongside your time in the classroom and you should expect to spend additional time on your studies.

The course will be a combination of assessments, practical work and exams according to the specs of each unit
For some trips or visits, there may be additional charges that apply which you will be made aware of when and if appropriate.
