Course Overview

The Construction Equipment Maintenance Technician apprenticeship is suitable for roles across the construction and plant engineering industry including the maintenance, inspection and repair of heavy equipment such as excavators, dumpers and loaders. The role involves working independently to diagnose faults, carry out repairs and ensure equipment is safe, compliant and operating efficiently.

Employers may include plant hire companies, construction firms, civil engineering contractors and specialist maintenance businesses, ranging from small independent organisations through to large national employers. This apprenticeship supports progression into senior technician and engineering roles, with opportunities to specialise in areas such as diagnostics, hydraulics and heavy equipment maintenance.

Which course is right for you?

Level 2 Land based Service Engineer: Ideal for starting your career, developing the core knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to maintain and repair machinery, with progression to Level 3 Land based Service Engineering Technician or Level 3 Construction Plant Maintenance Technician.
Level 3 Land based Service Engineering Technician: Advanced diagnostics, complex repairs and supervisory skills within agriculture, horticulture and groundcare sectors.
Level 3 Construction Plant Maintenance Technician: Maintenance and repair of heavy construction machinery, working in construction and plant hire industries.

More information

A range of advanced knowledge, skills and behaviours are required to prepare you for your End Point Assessment (EPA). These include:

• Inspecting, servicing and maintaining construction equipment and machinery.
• Diagnosing faults across mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Carrying out repairs and replacing components to manufacturer standards.
• Understanding and applying health and safety legislation when working with heavy equipment.
• Interpreting technical manuals, schematics and digital diagnostic systems.
• Carrying out inspections and producing equipment condition reports.
• Communicating effectively with colleagues, supervisors and customers.
• Working independently and as part of a team within a construction or plant environment.
Apprentices who do not hold Maths & English L2 or GSCE grades 4 (C) will need to complete these prior to completion of the apprenticeship programme (Gateway).

You must have secured a position with an employer and be ready to start working with them before you can begin your apprenticeship course.

If you already have an employer and they have agreed to put you through an apprenticeship, contact the Apprenticeship team and we’ll get you started. Email apprenticeships@wiltshire.ac.uk or call 0845 345 2235.
The Construction Equipment Maintenance Technician apprenticeship is delivered through block release at our Lackham campus, with approximately 10 weeks per year in college over the duration of the programme. You will also be supported in the workplace, with visits from your Assessor approximately every 10 to 12 weeks.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, you’ll need to record a minimum of 6 hours per week ‘off-the-job’ training. This can include college attendance, work shadowing, training, workshops, online learning, tutor sessions, revision, webinars and industry visits.

You will build a portfolio of work-based evidence through practical assessments, workplace observations and assignments. This will prepare you for your End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes a professional discussion and assessment of your competence.

On successful completion, you will achieve the Level 3 Construction Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Standard, with progression opportunities into advanced technician, supervisory or specialist engineering roles.
