This apprenticeship is made up of the Level 5 Children, Young People and Families Manager Apprenticeship Standard and the Level 5 Diploma in Residential Childcare.
In apprenticeships, Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) are essential components that define the competencies an apprentice must demonstrate.
The Level 5 Children. Young People and Families Manager Apprenticeship Standard is made of Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours. These are assessed at the end of the Apprenticeship in an End Point Assessment and cover mandatory topics such as:
– Theories underpinning the learning, development and motivation of individuals and teams
– Leadership skills that set the ethos, aims and approach of the home
– Manages the application of professional judgement, standards and codes of practice
– Modelling an ethos that actively promotes equality, resilience, dignity and respects diversity and inclusion
– The principles and practice of supervision with staff
– Understanding and implementing the safeguarding requirements at local and national levels
– Creating a healthy, safe and stimulating environment that fulfils health and safety legislation and requirements
– Understands the quality assurance of health and social care in line with OFSTED, CQC and other regulatory bodies
– The theories of intervention to meet the needs to children, young people and adults within the family
– Develops, facilitates and leads changes in working practices that deliver improved outcomes
– Actively encourages the participation of children, young people and families in service improvement
– The practice and principles of resource management, including the commissioning cycle and its application
– Inter-agency and multi-agency work and its role in ensuring positive outcomes
– Engages in reflective practice and develops a learning culture across the team.
Within the Level 5 Diploma for Residential Childcare learners must achieve 57 credits from the mandatory units and a minimum of 8 credits from at least 3 optional units. Your assessor will support you with choosing your optional units.
The mandatory units cover core knowledge and skills, while the optional units will allow you to choose from a variety of areas to tailor the qualification to your needs and interests, and to reflect the context of your work.

– Lead and manage group living
– Lead a service that can support children or young people who have experienced harm or abuse
– Lead practice to achieve positive outcomes for children and young people
– Implement a Positive Relationship Policy
– Lead practice to support the well-being and resilient of children and young people
– Lead practice in safe use of digital, internet and mobile technology with children and young people
– Undertake professional development
– Lead practice to promote the rights, diversity and equality of children and young people
– Lead networks and multi-agency work to benefit children and young people
Some optional units are knowledge only and can be completed with a written assignment, others have some written elements as well as skills that must be observed by your assessor. If you choose an optional unit with skills as part of it, you must be able to demonstrate these when observed.
There is no college attendance for this apprenticeship. Learning will take place both within the workplace and in your non-working time. You must be able to study independently outside of the workplace. Your practical skills will regularly be observed by your assessor.
