Course Overview

Offered exclusively at Wiltshire College & University Centre in Salisbury and validated by Bournemouth University, our Film Production and Cinematography BA (Hons) is an industry-focused, hands-on programme designed to prepare you for a career in film and television. Guided by experienced professionals dedicated solely to this course, you’ll receive personalised training in every aspect of filmmaking.

Develop practical skills using industry-standard equipment, including digital cinema cameras such as Arri Alexa SXT and Sony FS7, and celluloid film cameras such as Arri SR3. Access our dedicated film studio with programmable lighting system and produce professional-standard films with top-tier lighting and grip resources. Gain expertise in post-production tools like Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.

Set in the historic city of Salisbury, our location offers cinematic landscapes that have featured in Hollywood hits such as 1917, Saving Private Ryan, and The Crown. Graduates from our programme have worked on major productions like Gladiator II, Wonka, and Killing Eve. Notably, one alum secured placements for 12 students on the award-winning film 1917.

With a focus on industry-aligned projects, real-world placements, and a track record of graduate success – including a short graduate film evolving into a feature that screened on Film4 and streamed on Channel 4 – our course equips you with the skills, experience, and confidence to turn your passion for filmmaking into a professional career.”

Teaching and Learning:

You are normally required to complete a placement, the minimum requirement for which is a 4 week ‘short’ placement. Successful completion of a short placement is a graduation requirement although students are encouraged to complete the short placement between years 2 and 3.

As an alternative to the short placement and with sufficient notice, you may undertake a 30-week ‘sandwich’ placement. The sandwich placement must take place between years 2 and 3 and be in the broad area of Film or Television Production.

To be allowed to proceed to year 3, you must:

– Complete a minimum of 30 weeks satisfactory work experience (‘sandwich placement’ students).
– Complete the placement logbook satisfactorily which may include assignments relating to the nature of your work and the organisation you are working in.
– Satisfactorily meet the performance criteria of the placement as determined by the completed assessment forms from the company and you.

The supervised work placement draws on some or all the modules studied on the first two years of the programme. It provides the opportunity for you to develop your abilities and demonstrate an understanding of Film Production and Cinematography and related subjects as well as providing a platform for successful entry into the profession following graduation.

It applies and demonstrate an understanding of the skills acquired in years 1 and 2 and makes a major contribution to the understanding of the final level modules and further develops dissertation research by utilising the context of the work experience as appropriate and enhances your prospects of future employment.
You can apply for this programme via the UCAS website and you can contact the college on +44 (0)1225 756200 or email HEAdmissions@wiltshire.ac.uk for more information.

The UCAS institution code for the programme is B50.

The UCAS course code for the programme is PW36.

The cost of this programme is £9,250 per year (£16,250 per year for international students).

You may be required to purchase relevant textbooks as recommended by individual lecturers.

Your tuition fee covers a wide range of student services that will support you through your study. You will have access to an extensive supply of industry standard film equipment, such as camera, lighting, and postproduction facilities. Academic and technical staff will deliver lectures, workshops, and tutorial support.

A small number of specific collaborative 16mm film projects will receive a small budget for film stock/processing, and other production expenses.

Not all film projects will be funded by your tuition fee, see ‘Production Costs’ below.

The Learning Resource Centre will provide you with access to a wide range of electronic resources (databases, e-journals and e-books), print and multimedia collections.

There will also be trips throughout the course, and you will benefit from visiting lecturers, which will include professional directors, scriptwriters, and cinematographers.

No Hidden Extras: You will produce many films during your time on this course, across multiple genres, and the cost of producing these films will vary. Film production costs such as transportation, cast, locations, and props can quickly accumulate, so you need to carefully consider the logistics of your projects. Big budgets do not guarantee big quality, and the amount of money spent on a film will not affect the assessment of your work. Lecture staff will support you in developing concepts that could be produced on a minimal budget, and we will also advise you on sourcing financial support for your major film productions.

All the equipment necessary for you to produce a professional quality film will be provided by the college.

The Office for Students (OfS), the new independent regulator for Higher Education in England, has confirmed that the college is successfully registered as a provider for Higher Education and that students are eligible for funding and student support from Student Finance England.
