Meet our graduate: Lewis Gittins, Higher Education Student Governor

As Higher Education Student Governor, Lewis Gittins helped represent the student voice while completing his Higher National Diploma (HND) in Crime and Criminal Justice (Public Services) at Wiltshire College & University Centre (WCUC).

The 19-year-old from Corsham has completed his studies with a distinction and is preparing to graduate at Salisbury Cathedral this week. He is now continuing his academic journey with the Open University, studying for a BSc (Hons) focused on Crime, Harm and the State, and International Relations.

We caught up with Lewis to talk about his experience as Student Governor, what he enjoyed most about his time at WCUC and how his studies have prepared him for the future.

WCUC: What motivated you to study Criminal Justice at WCUC?

Lewis: “After completing my Level 3 in Criminology and Law at WCUC, I was inspired to continue thanks to my passion for the subject and the outstanding support from lecturers. Their encouragement motivated me to progress to the Higher National Diploma in Public Services (Crime and Criminal Justice), where I strengthened my understanding of the system and built my professional skills.”

WCUC: What did you enjoy most about your time at College?

Lewis: “I really valued the chance to bring learning to life through guest speakers and real-world experiences. The trip to Poland was a particular highlight – it gave valuable insight into different aspects of criminal justice and created unforgettable memories. Meeting some incredible people along the way made it even better.”

WCUC: What did you gain from being the Higher Education Student Governor?

Lewis: “It was an incredibly rewarding experience that placed the student voice at the heart of College decision-making. I had the opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction of WCUC and see the fantastic developments shaping higher education here. One of my proudest achievements was setting out a new plan for the future of the Student Alliance, giving future student leaders a clear direction for strengthening engagement and representation.”

WCUC: What’s your proudest achievement from your course?

Lewis: “Completing my HND with a distinction is my proudest achievement. It’s the result of years of dedication and countless late nights perfecting assignments. Seeing all that effort pay off is incredibly rewarding.”

WCUC: How did your studies prepare you for your degree with the Open University?

Lewis: “My time at WCUC gave me the essential knowledge and academic skills to progress confidently to my next chapter of education. I’ve chosen to focus on Crime, Harm and the State, and International Relations. The foundation I developed at WCUC has been invaluable in supporting my independent learning.”

WCUC: What are your career ambitions for the future?

Lewis: “Right now, I’m keeping my options open and exploring different paths to see where my strengths and interests align. I’m excited to continue building experience across a range of sectors and see where that takes me.”

WCUC: What advice would you give to future students?

Lewis: “Immerse yourself in the course and take every opportunity. Stay engaged with current affairs – it makes your learning come alive and much more rewarding.”

WCUC: What does graduating mean to you personally?

Lewis: “Graduation is a milestone that represents years of hard work, dedication and personal growth, as well as the support I’ve had along the way. It’s a chance to reflect, celebrate and look forward to the opportunities ahead.”

Lewis will officially graduate at Salisbury Cathedral this week, joining fellow students from across Wiltshire College & University Centre to celebrate their achievements and look ahead to the next chapter.
