Kieran’s garden path to success: Wiltshire apprentice wins national horticulture award

WHAT started as a chance job has blossomed into national recognition for Wiltshire College & University Centre apprentice Kieran Byrne – winner of the prestigious BALI Chalk Fund Top Student of the Year Award.

The award celebrates outstanding progress and potential among students in the land-based industries and is presented by the British Association of Landscape Industries’ charitable fund.

Kieran, 23, from Swindon, was nominated by his tutors and stood out for his strong practical skills, commitment to learning, and the real-world impact he’s made during his apprenticeship.

We couldn’t be prouder of Kieran who is completing his Level 2 Horticulture and Landscaping Operative Apprenticeship at the College’s Lackham campus while working with IJT Landscaping in Swindon.

Presenting Kieran with his certificate in a beautiful garden he helped build was a special moment. Surrounded by lush planting and thoughtful design, the setting brough his hard work to life – a clear showcase of the skills he’s developed throughout his apprenticeship.

It was clear how proud his colleagues were on the day – not just of the award, but of the real difference Kieran is making through his work. And for Kieran, seeing the impact firsthand is what motivates him most.

“This place used to be all concrete – a big driveway,” he explained. “We transformed the whole thing. When we were finished, the owner came out and cried. She was so happy. That’s when you feel proud – when you know you’ve made a difference to someone’s life.”

Kieran’s path into horticulture began by chance, after a family connection helped him secure a job as a gardener, which soon became a passion.

“I didn’t want to sit inside all day,” he said. “I wanted to be outdoors, get fresh air, and be active – so gardening sounded ideal.”

Soon after starting, Kieran was offered the opportunity to become an apprentice. He now attends college one day a week, with the rest of his time spent learning on the job across IJT’s horticulture and landscaping teams.

The mix of college-based learning and practical work has proven to be a strong combination for Kieran.

“What I learn at work helps me at college, and what I learn at college I can use straight away on site,” he said. “It all connects – it really helps things sink in,” said Kieran.

Ian Teasdale, Director at IJT Landscaping, said the apprenticeship has been a hugely positive experience for the business.

“It brings fresh energy and enthusiasm into the workplace, and it’s been fulfilling to see their knowledge and skills develop over time,” Ian said.

“Our apprentice has shown strong commitment, a willingness to learn and a genuine passion for plants and the environment, and in return, we’ve provided hands-on experience, mentorship, and opportunities to take part in a variety of tasks.”

“The apprenticeship programme allows us to invest in the future of our industry by helping to train the next generation of horticulturists and we highly recommend the apprenticeship pathway to other employers.”

As part of the award process, Kieran submitted a written application and was supported by his tutors, who praised his growth and dedication.

“I didn’t expect to win, especially as the other nominees were in the year above me, said Kieran. “But it’s amazing to be recognised – it just makes me want to keep going.”

Kieran credits the support of his tutors at Lackham – particularly their guidance, encouragement and real-world teaching – with helping him grow in both skill and confidence throughout his apprenticeship.

Now more than halfway through his Level 2, Kieran is already planning his next step – a Level 3 apprenticeship – and hopes to keep growing his career in the industry.
