Open events lift the lid on college life and give young people a chance to explore their career possibilities

THERE will be a final chance for prospective students to get a glimpse of life at Wiltshire College & University Centre at its last open evenings of the academic year.

2,500 young people and their parents have already visited the campuses in Chippenham, Lacock, Salisbury and Trowbridge over three rounds of open events to talk to lecturers and current students about what life is like there.

“We understand that for young people who are getting ready to leave school, or planning their final years there, it’s a huge step and the decisions they make now could shape the rest of their working lives,” said Principal & Chief Executive Iain Hatt.

“That’s why we are so keen to invite them in, answer their questions about the courses they are considering and discuss how they can reach their career goals with us. We know they and their parents want to be certain that their next step is the right one for them.”

Visitors will have the chance to listen to a member of the college leadership team give a talk about the college and what students can expect from studying there. They can wander round the campus and visit as many departments as they like.

They may also be able to join a tour led by student ambassadors, who will share their own experiences and pass on their tips for making the most of the opportunities to be found on campus. “It is really useful for our prospective students to hear directly from people close to their own age who they can relate to,” said Mr Hatt.

The most valuable aspect of the open events for visitors is being able to go into the departments where they will be studying to chat with the people who could be teaching them.

“Every department will have staff ready and willing to listen to what prospective students want to achieve and then talk about what they can expect to learn, how that will help them on their career path and where they can progress afterwards,” said Mr Hatt.

“Visitors can look around some of the fantastic facilities, like our new Healthcare Zone at Salisbury, our state-of-the art IT kit at Tech Trowbridge, the cutting edge robotic dairy and Wiltshire Business Centre at Lackham and our excellent automotive centres at Chippenham and Trowbridge.

“Many of the departments, like our hair and beauty at Chippenham, Salisbury and Trowbridge, will put on demonstrations and activities so visitors can really get a feel for how they will be learning new skills.”

There will also be application stations where admissions staff can help students apply for their courses there and then. More than 850 students have already taken advantage of the help and guidance on offer to make their applications at open events so far.

Each campus event will have talks by members of the college’s support and inclusion team to answer questions about how students with additional needs are supported.

The open events are at Chippenham on April 30, Trowbridge on May 1, Salisbury on May 6, all starting at 5pm, and Lackham on May 10 from 10am to 12pm.

Places can be booked via the events section of our website. Young people and their families are welcome to come along on the day.
