Construction students visit Bewley Homes development

BEWLEY Homes welcomed students from Wiltshire College & University Centre to its King’s Water development in Ashton Keynes, giving them valuable first-hand insight into housebuilding on site.

The visit was organised as part of Bewley Homes’ ongoing commitment to inspiring young people to pursue careers in the housebuilding industry. Students training as bricklayers and carpenters were given the opportunity to experience work on a live construction site and gain valuable insight into the different stages of the build process.

Leading the tour was Bewley Homes Contracts Manager Rob Fletcher who shared knowledge from his 20 years of experience in the industry. Rob qualified as a carpenter at Swindon College at the age of 19, making the visit particularly meaningful for students considering similar career paths.

Throughout the visit, students were able to view homes at various stages of construction while speaking with site teams and subcontractors about their roles and experiences within the industry.

Mel Sweetman, Head of Department for Construction, praised Bewley Homes for its proactive approach in supporting young people and helping bridge the gap between education and industry experience.

Mel said: “We are incredibly grateful to Bewley Homes for giving our students this fantastic opportunity. Housebuilders like Bewley should be applauded for taking the time to show students around a live site and answer their questions.”

Andrew Brooks, Managing Director at Bewley Homes, said the initiative reflects the company’s long-term commitment to supporting the future of the industry.

“This is all about inspiring young people into housebuilding. It’s well known that we have a significant skills shortage across the construction industry and we need to engage with students and showcase the opportunities available,” Andrew said.

“Giving students the chance to visit a live site and speak with subcontractors who have built successful careers in the industry helps spark interest and demonstrates the wide range of skills and opportunities available within housebuilding.”

Staff and students at the development

As part of its commitment to fostering new talent, Bewley Homes has been visiting colleges in its regions and developing stronger relationships with educational providers to help encourage more young people into the sector.

Following the successful visit, the College has invited senior members of the Bewley Homes team to meet with students to discuss the wider range of opportunities available in the housebuilding industry and share their own career experiences.
