Sport students go the extra mile in Movember fundraising efforts

Students at Wiltshire College & University Centre’s Trowbridge campus went the extra mile in an effort to raise money for Movember charities.

Members of the Level 3 Sport course organised an activity challenge on campus, encouraging fellow students and staff to take part and donate in support of Movember – the annual fundraising event held during November aimed at raising awareness of men’s health issues.

Using static exercise bikes set up in the reception area, the group attempted to travel the distance between the campus on College Road to Wembley Stadium, approximately 100 miles. The activity also helped support the Sports Development unit of the course as it was intended to encourage students and staff to be more physically active, which in turn helps to improve mental health.

In an effort to drive more donations and hit their fundraising target of £200, one student, Bryn, also volunteered to have his head shaved if the goal was achieved – something the group managed with ease.

Bryn, who is aged 18 from Devizes, said: “Movember is a really good cause because it’s important to raise awareness of men’s health, whether that be their physical health or mental health.

“We wanted to do something different and, as we’re studying sports courses, we decided to do something physical and active. The challenge was the same day that England were playing Malta at Wembley, so it made sense to see if we match the journey to the stadium.

“We started the challenge first thing in the morning and wanted to raise £200 by the end of the lunch break at 1pm. We’d already hit that after a couple of hours, so I didn’t have much choice but to do the head shave too, but I was happy to do it as it’s all for a good cause.

“Lots of people chipped in so we were able to hit the target of cycling100 miles, and we’re really pleased with the amount of money we raised overall too.”

In total, the group raised £355 in donations. Congratulations to all students who organised the event and thank you to everyone who took part or donated.
