Course Overview

Are you ready to take your passion for the equine industry to the next level? With access to the best facilities in the area, links to local and national industry providers and blue-chip events such as the Badminton Horse Trials, an equine course at Lackham could transform your dream into your career. You’ll spend two days a week honing your riding skills in the arena at local equestrian centres and your learning at the yard will be reinforced by lessons with our experienced lecturers, whose industry links will help you find the perfect industry placement and make your ambitions reality.

More information

Whether you choose the riding or non-riding route, this two-year A-Level equivalent qualification will give you an excellent grounding in all aspects of Horse Management.

The riding pathway will help you build your confidence, with modules including riding horses on the flat and riding over fences, giving you a comprehensive experience. While at the yard, you’ll learn the practical skills needed for daily work in a variety of equine roles, including tacking, equipment, feeding, behaviour and grooming.

Your practical learning will be underpinned by detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology and nutrition, giving you the key to take your studies further. You will gain knowledge and understanding on health, welfare, behaviour, nutrition, rehabilitation, fitness and Business studies, which will enable you to identify your niche within the industry.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science, or equivalent.
The final qualification will be a City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Horse Management.

You will be assessed through written, practical and industry-based assessments.

An Industry Placement is a fundamental part of this course. An Industry Placement gives you the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience for your future. You will be supported throughout your placement by our dedicated Work Placement Team.
Please be aware there is a weight limit of 14 stone for riding.

Enrichment activities such as trips and visits to shows and other related events are an important aspect of the programme. You will be expected to contribute to the cost of these activities, which is £150, via the College shop. Please note that this cost is non-refundable.

You will also need to purchase your own personal protective equipment such as hats, boots and body protectors.
