Course Overview

If your ambition is to work with animals, this course is an excellent stepping stone towards your goal. Our industry-leading Animal Resource Centre at the College’s Lackham campus – where the course is based – is an inspiring learning environment, with modern, zoo-standard vivaria, aviaries and enclosures. Learning in this environment you will gain a wealth of industry experience reinforced by specialist technical and practical skills. The Animal Resource Centre is LAIA and DWA compliant.

More information

You’ll learn how to work safely in the animal care industry and start building your knowledge in animal health and welfare, behaviour, handling and biology, giving you the tools for further study and the foundation for a rewarding career working with animals. Practical experience forms a core part of the qualification and you’ll combine fundamental academic study with extensive hands-on experience within the Animal Resource Centre.
4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including English and Maths, or equivalent.
You will be assessed through a combination of written, practical and industry-based assessments.

An industry placement is a fundamental part of the course and gives you the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience for your future. You will be supported throughout your placement by our dedicated Work Placement Team.

The final accredited qualification is the City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care & Welfare.
You will need to supply your own personal protective equipment and practical clothing. This clothing must be worn during all practical sessions and is available to purchase from the online College shop.

Enrichment activities such as trips and visits to shows and other animal related events are an important aspect of the programme. You will be expected to contribute to the cost of these activities, which is £150, via the College shop. Please note that this cost is non-refundable.
