Course Overview

The Land based Service Engineer apprenticeship is suitable for roles across the land based engineering industry including the maintenance, repair and preparation of machinery, plant and equipment used in sectors such as agriculture, horticulture and groundcare. The role involves working with a wide range of machinery, carrying out servicing, diagnostics and inspections to ensure equipment is safe, efficient and ready for use.

Employers may include agricultural and groundcare machinery dealerships, contractors, estates and commercial engineering businesses, ranging from small independent workshops through to large national companies. This apprenticeship supports progression into skilled technician roles within land based engineering, with opportunities to advance onto the Level 3 Land Based Service Engineering Technician apprenticeship or Level 3 Construction Equipment Maintenance Technician apprenticeship.

Which course is right for you?

Level 2 Land based Service Engineer: Ideal for starting your career, developing the core knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to maintain and repair machinery, with progression to Level 3 Land based Service Engineering Technician or Level 3 Construction Plant Maintenance Technician.
Level 3 Land based Service Engineering Technician: Advanced diagnostics, complex repairs and supervisory skills within agriculture, horticulture and groundcare sectors.
Level 3 Construction Plant Maintenance Technician: Maintenance and repair of heavy construction machinery, working in construction and plant hire industries.

A range of knowledge, skills and behaviours are required from learners to prepare for your End Point Assessment (EPA) to complete this apprenticeship which include:

• Preparing new and second-hand machinery for sale or hire.
• Carrying out pre-delivery inspections in line with manufacturer and workplace procedures.
• Performing routine service and maintenance operations following manufacturer schedules.
• Preparing equipment for repair, including cleaning, dismantling and reassembly of components.
• Conducting routine machine operation checks and systems testing.
• Accessing and interpreting technical data and manufacturer documentation.
• Supporting the handover of machinery, plant and equipment for safe use.
• Understanding and applying health and safety legislation, regulations and workplace procedures.
• Developing knowledge of workplace practices, including communication, teamwork and chain of command.
Apprentices who do not hold Maths & English L1 or GSCE grades 2 (E) will need to complete these prior to completion of the apprenticeship programme (Gateway).

The Land based Service Engineer apprenticeship is delivered through block release at our Lackham campus, with approximately 10 weeks per year in college over the duration of the programme. You will also be supported in the workplace, with visits from your Assessor approximately every 10 to 12 weeks.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, you’ll need to record a minimum of 6 hours per week ‘off-the-job’ training. This can include college attendance, work shadowing, training, workshops, online learning, tutor sessions, revision, webinars and industry visits.

You will build a portfolio of work-based evidence through practical assessments, workplace observations and assignments. This will prepare you for your End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes a professional discussion and assessment of your competence.

On successful completion, you will achieve the Level 2 Land based Service Engineer Apprenticeship Standard, with progression opportunities to the Level 3 Land based Service Engineering Technician apprenticeship or the Level 3 Construction Equipment Maintenance Technician apprenticeship.
This apprenticeship lasts 24 months plus 3 months for the End Point Assessment (EPA).
