Course Overview

Are you interested in a career in counselling? If you’re looking to understand the ethical considerations of helping others, this course is for you. The course will help you develop your understanding of counselling theories and the nature of counselling as a professional activity. This may enhance existing work or activities for some, whilst for others it may be the next step in training towards professional status as a counsellor. The aim of the course is to provide an overview of counselling in an agency, to introduce you to a range of counselling theories, and to provide some theoretical and professional perspectives on why counsellors do what they do.

More information

A range of theoretical ideas will be introduced, including humanistic, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural and transpersonal models or maps of human needs, motivations and behaviours. The nature of relating itself will be a part of this, as will the nature of the counselling process. Other material will be concerned with the need for ethical considerations to be at the heart of counselling.
Before applying for this course, you must have successfully completed the Certificate in Counselling Skills Level 2 (CPCAB) or equivalent.
Start date above is a rough guide, as timetables are still being finalised.

The course is available part time as both a daytime and an evening course. The daytime course will run from 9am-4pm one day a week, from March until June. The evening course runs from 6pm-9pm, one evening a week, from October until June.

Students are required to undertake five weeks of personal counselling/therapy. This cost is not included in the course fees. This qualification is not suitable for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological confusion. Please note that counselling courses include personal development activities that involve you talking about some of your personal experience in the group. For this reason we advise people in close relationship not to attend the same training group. (If you need further guidance on this, please ask to speak to a tutor). An interview is required for this course.
