Course Overview


A career in Engineering is an exciting and rewarding one and this Level 3 course will give you the right grounding to go on into a career in research, manufacturing, quality assurance, project management, development & testing and much more.As part of this two-year course you will complete a 50-day work placement (in your first year) with an engineering employer in the area to give you a real flavour of the industry first-hand. You will complete your work placement on non-college days.This course is equivalent to three A levels.


What will I learn?


You will learn the basic principles of mechanics and the theory and practice of mechanical and electrical / electronic engineering in the context of simple machines. You will also examine the ways in which various forces can affect motion as well as learning about thermodynamics and its various applications in mechanical engineering.

Units covered include Mechanical Principles, Principles and Applications of Thermodynamics, Engineering Drawing for Technicians and Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems and Devices.

Entry Requirements


- GCSE Maths at Grade 5/B and 3 GCSEs at Grade 4/C including English Language and Science (or equivalent).

- It is optional to take AS level Maths alongside this qualification.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications


You will study a total of 15 BTEC units (Extended Diploma) over the two years of the course. The units are assessed mainly by coursework - This may include assignment work, presentations and design projects, however there are mandatory units that are externally assessed (exam).

For each unit you complete, you will be awarded a Pass (P), Merit (M), or Distinction (D) grade. You will be awarded an overall grade such as PPP, MMM, DDD or D*D*D* (a D*D*D* grade is the direct equivalent of three A* grade A levels at and is worth the same - 420 UCAS points for university entry)

An Industry Placement is a fundamental part of this course. An Industry Placement gives you the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience for your future. You will be supported throughout your placement by our dedicated Work Placement Team.

Final Qualification:

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.

Additional Costs and Information


You will be provided with additional information and guidance at interview, enrolment and during induction. The College will assist you in finding suitable placement opportunities in the industry and will support you throughout.

You will be required to provide protective clothing and shoes for any practical activity. A set of drawing instruments will be needed. You will be expected to contribute towards the costs of any organised trips and visits. Further information will be provided by your tutor.
