Course Overview

Early Years Educators are highly trained professionals who play a key role in ensuring that young children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. They prepare children for the transition to school and offer a broad range of knowledge and skills that provide a solid foundation for good progress throughout a child’s school life.You will need to have the right values and behaviours, developing competencies and skills to provide high quality childcare in a child’s first few years.You could be based in a range of settings including full day care, children’s centres, pre-schools and child-minding.As an apprentice you should be working at a level where you are working on your own or supervising others and have prior experience of the sector and be employed in a position whereby you are able to demonstrate the competencies required at this level.Your job role as a residential childcare worker will involve you working in settings such as residential care homes, residential special schools, therapeutic communities, secure children’s homes and shared care settings. You will be responsible for promoting a caring, healthy, stimulating, safe and secure environment for children and young people in your care.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to support and promote Children’s early education and development, plan and provide effective care, teaching and learning, develop effective and informed practice, and promote the health, safety and welfare of children.

There are two pathways available for this course: the Early Years Educator, and Residential Childcare. The total minimum credit value for this pathway is 79 credits, made up of:

Combined competence and knowledge qualification – 61 credits (minimum)
Maths, English and ICT (transferable skills) – 15 credits
ERR Qualification – 3 credits

For the residential childcare, learners will complete 16 mandatory units, and a choice of optional units.

Entry Requirements

Before a learner begins this qualification, an Initial Assessment is undertaken. This provides the evidence to determine the starting point of learning and assessment. This will include checking if the candidate has the language, literacy, and numeracy skills necessary to achieve the qualification, and this identifies what candidates needs to learn.

Must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week. Learners must be over the age of 18 to complete the Residential course, and must be at least two years older than the oldest child in the home.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

Qualification: apprentices must successfully complete a Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification. Apprentices without a recognised Maths, English or ICT qualification at Level 2, including functional skills, will be required to achieve this prior to taking their end point assessment. Must also hold an ERR qualification.

You will need a Level 2 Food hygiene certificate, a full 12 hour Paediatric First Aid certificate, and an award in ICT in the Early Years.

20% off the job training is now required for all apprenticeships. This can be a joint responsibility of employer and college assessors.

Additional Costs and Information

Duration of the course is typically 18 – 24 months for those new to the sector. For those with the relevant qualifications and experience in the Early Years sector, 12 – 18 months.
