Course Overview
Are you ready to kickstart your career in barbering? This Level 2 course will give you a solid foundation in essential barbering skills and knowledge. You’ll learn and work in the Aspire Academy of Hair and Beauty, the College’s own salon located at our Trowbridge, Chippenham and Salisbury campuses. The salons feature professional products and industry-standard equipment; you’ll experience a realistic and immersive working environment while being fully supported by our experienced lecturers. In our salons you will work with members of the general public who are paying clients, giving you an incredible insight into the real world of work – both on reception and in the salon itself.
What will I learn?
During this course, you’ll cover all the course skills you need to either progress onto further training or to enter the world of work in barbering. You’ll study the following mandatory units:
• Principles of hairdressing and barbering services
• Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
• Cut hair using basic barbering techniques
• Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
• Dry and finish men’s hair
• Create basic outlines and detailing in hair
The hairdressing department works with local employers to enrich your experience on the course. You will participate in structured work experience or work placements within their businesses, as well as exciting and unique lectures on specialist topics given by industry experts.
Study, Assessment and Qualifications
To achieve this qualification, you must successfully complete the following assessments:
• One externally set, externally moderated practical assignment
• One externally set, externally marked theory exam
A minimum of three hours per week of home study is required and 30 hours of work experience.
You will be assessed while working on clients in the Aspire salons throughout the duration of the course.
The final qualification is a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Barbering.
Entry Requirements
• 4 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above, including English and maths.
• A good reference.
• A good record of attendance.
• An interview.
Additional Costs and Information
You will need a uniform and kit for this course – this will be discussed at your interview. In cases of financial hardship, funds may be available to help with the cost of this.
We also arrange educational activities and competitions as part of the course, which may incur an additional cost.
What Could I Do Next?
After completing this qualification, you could progress onto a Level 3 Technical Diploma in Barbering, or you could move into the world of work as a junior barber.
