This online, distance-learning course is tailored to work around your busy life style and provides you with the flexibility to enrol anytime throughout the year. If you are looking to enhance your career or add to your continued professional development (CPD) portfolio within the animal care industry, then this is qualification is aimed at you.You will need to complete 8 hours online learning after which you will attend a 4 hour practical assessment session within the animal centre at our Lackham campus.This qualification is suitable if you are 16 years old or over.You will gain the practical skills and knowledge that are important for working with animals. There are many opportunities, such as working in a kennel or cattery, for an animal welfare charity or shelter, in a retail environment, such as a pet store, or an animal training establishment. You could also progress to further learning and training in this area.
What will I learn?
Once you have completed and achieved the underpinning theory units, you will need to attend a 4hr practical session at the Lackham campus. The practical takes place on a Sunday, where you will meet other students who are completing the course and will cover all the practical elements and assessments.

This City & Guilds qualification is supported by the Pet Industry Federation and is ideal for Vet Nurses and other professionals within the animal industry, who are looking to refresh their current theoretical and practical skills or to enhance their CV. This qualification also covers the skills you will need to progress to working in the animal care industry. Mandatory content covers:
animal housing and social groupings
, feeding animals
, animal husbandry tasks and ethics
, and handling and basic health checks
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
Study, Assessment and Qualifications
To achieve this qualification, you need to complete 8hrs online learning and attend a 4hr practical lesson within the animal centre at the Lackham land based campus.
The assessment for this qualification will require you to achieve one to one practical assessment with oral questioning.
The qualification certificate is endorsed in the animal species that you are working with.
Additional Costs and Information
There are no additional costs associated to this qualification as all learning resources will be provided to you by your tutor.
You are expected to wear appropriate PPE when attending the practical session with includes:
Work boots or wellingtons (trainers are not permitted)
Polo shirt (shoulders must be covered)
Rain coat/all-weather jacket
Jeans or dark coloured work trousers (no torn jeans, leggings or fashion trousers)
No body piercings and hair tied back
