Course Overview
Delivered at our Chippenham campus, the Higher National Certificate (HNC) Engineering (Electrical / Electronic) pathway is aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning.The course provides a wide-ranging study of the electrical or electronic sector and is designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in this sector.In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the electrical or electronic engineering sector, this course will give you experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare you for further study or training.
What will I learn?
The course typically involves modules in the following subjects:
Year One (HNC):
- Engineering Design
- Engineering Maths
- Engineering Science
- Quality and Process Improvement
- Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems
Year Two (HNC):
- Engineering Project
- Electrical / Electronic Principles
- Automation, Robotics and PLCs
- Professional Engineering Management (* level 5 unit)
- Further Maths (*level 5 unit)

*Level 5 units are optional and are not part of the HNC (level 4 study programme). They can be taken as standalone units (additional cost) and/or part of the HND (level 5) programme.
Study, Assessment and Qualifications
The duration for this part-time course is 2 years attending one day per week.
Teaching and Learning:
Studied over two years, this course is assessed through a mixture of continuous assessment including assignments, written assessments and exams for some higher grades.
Practical sessions take place in modern purpose built labs with specialist equipment and software provided. You will have access to resources such as our online learning environments, eStudy and Microsoft Teams with free access to a wide range of eBooks and journals.
Entry Requirements
Although Pearson do not specify formal entry requirements, for students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:
· A BTEC level 3 qualification in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or General Engineering.
· Other related level 3 qualifications such as an Access to Higher Education diploma awarded by an approved Further Education institution.
· This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades A* to C (9 to 4 or equivalent) in subjects such as English and Maths.
· Related work experience.
· An international equivalent of the above.

The cost of this programme is £3,250 per year.
You may be required to purchase relevant textbooks as recommended by individual lecturers.
Should you wish to progress onto the HND in the third year, two additional modules highlighted with an asterisk will need to be achieved during the second year of the HNC.
These modules are priced at £650 each but will be deducted from the overall fees for the HND.

What Could I Do Next?
You could progress onto a top-up year or equivalent level 6 qualification in Electronic / Electrical Engineering.The course also provides you with a solid grounding in electonic or electrical engineering, vendor accredited certification and professional body membership upon which you can build should you decide to continue your studies beyond this stage.
