Course Overview
Gas engineering involves the safe installation, commission, decommission and the ongoing service and repair of gas appliances in either a domestic or non-domestic setting. Appliances can include, but are not limited to, a range of work categories such as central heating boilers, unvented hot water storage, ducted air heaters, cookers, space heaters, meters, alternative fuel, boosters, testing and purging for industrial pipework. Roles in gas engineering will include explaining how installations and appliances work, providing energy efficiency advice and ensuring customer service excellence at all times. Gas engineering operates strictly within the requirements of health and safety legislation. Roles in gas engineering are physical in nature, and may involve lifting and moving of equipment, working at heights and working in confined spaces. All gas engineers must be registered on the Gas Safe® Register for each appliance in which they are competent to undertake work on.
What will I learn?
· Health & Safety: To learn and understand the Health & Safety legislation, codes of practice and safe working practices within the Gas industry.
· Core Gas Systems & Appliances: To learn and understand safe installation and the commission and de-commission of Gas appliances associated pipework and the service and repair of appliances such as central Heating boilers, unvented hot water storage, ducted air heaters, cookers, space heaters , Gas meters, Gas boosters and the tightness testing & purging of Gas supply pipework systems.
· Principles and Procedures: To learn and understand the principles and procedures of combustion, combustion analysis, flueing, ventilation and carbon monoxide gases (CO). The emergency procedures (GIUSP) following Gas escapes, fumes and unsafe situations. To understand the principles of Liquid Pertroleum Gas (LPG).
· Technical Knowledge & Skills: To learn and understand essential electrical safety checks to enable the safe isolation of appliances and associated pipework. To carry out and complete the necessary documentation and Gas safety checks following works on appliances and associated pipework including tightness testing and ambient air testing for carbon Monoxide/oxides. To have the knowledge and skills for system design, controls and suitable flueing sytems along with an understanding of smart meters to help towards creating an energy saving and sustainable environment. To have knowledge of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Study, Assessment and Qualifications
The duration of this apprenticeship is typically 18 months. You will need to attend college 1 day per week for the duration. At the end of this period you will be required to complete an end point assessment which will test your knowledge and skills and will be assessed by an independent external assessor.
Entry Requirements
Applicants will normally have gained a minimum of grade A*-C or 9-4 in GCSE Maths and English or Functional Skills at Level 2.
This course requires completion of a Level 2 Plumbing apprenticeship.
You must have secured a position with an employer and be ready to start working with them before you can begin your apprenticeship course.
