Course Overview


This course will give you an insight into the craft areas within the area of construction. You will be learning basic skills in bricklaying, carpentry & joinery and painting and decorating. It will also prepare you for further learning at College, giving you the understanding and confidence you will need to succeed in your chosen area of study. This course may enable you to progress onto a Level 1 Diploma in your chosen area of construction in the following academic year.


What will I learn?


You will learn a range of practical skills including basic brickwork, carpentry & joinery and painting & decorating. Skills include:

• Mixing construction materials
• How to cut, lay and fix construction components
• How to apply finishing to materials
• Set out for construction components
• How to handle and store construction materials and components
• Fixing construction components
• A basic understanding of Health & Safety

You will also develop your personal, social and employability skills (including English and maths), whilst preparing for further training in your chosen occupational area.

Entry Requirements


This course has no formal entry requirements, although we do need to see any qualifications you have achieved during your previous education. Our staff will meet with you to find out if this is the right course for you.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications


Your studies and assessment will be within the framework of a flexible accredited Ascentis qualification at Entry 3 or Level 1, although we will individualise the programme according to your needs.

You will also study English and maths at a level that is right for you. We will agree which level is appropriate following an assessment which you can either take at interview or when your course begins. The qualification will be GCSE or Functional Skills College Certificate.

On completion of your course you may choose to progress onto these following courses

• A trade-specific Level 1 Diploma within the area of construction
• Other Level 1 vocational courses

Additional Costs and Information


Students must supply their own stationery, overalls and safety boots. Your course is likely to include trips to tourist attractions and community facilities which will require a contribution to the cost.

In addition, some work experience options may need special safety equipment or uniforms. You can apply for financial help from the College, if this cost is going to be a challenge
