Course Overview

This foundation level course will give you an insight into the different crafts which provide employment within the construction industry. You will learn basic skills in bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, and painting and decorating. The course will also prepare you for further study at College (such as a Level 1 Diploma in an area of construction), giving you the understanding and confidence you will need to succeed. You will learn in a specialist construction training environment using industry-standard equipment and be taught by experienced tutors.

What will I learn?

You will learn a range of practical skills including:

• Mixing construction materials
• How to cut, lay and fix construction components
• How to apply finishing to materials
• Set out for construction components
• How to handle and store construction materials and components
• Fixing construction components
• A basic understanding of health and safety

You will also develop your personal, social and employability skills (including English and maths), preparing you for further training in your chosen occupational area.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

The programme will be tailored to your individual needs within the framework of the accredited Ascentis qualification at Entry 3 or Level 1.

You will study English and maths at a level that is right for you, following an initial assessment when we interview you or when your course begins. In these subjects the qualification you will work towards is a GCSE or Functional Skills College Certificate.

Entry Requirements

Although this course has no formal entry requirements, learners will be studying at a foundation level. This is not a general taster course for our Construction and Trades courses.

We will need to see any qualifications you have achieved during your previous education and our staff will meet with you to find out if this is the right course for you.

Additional Costs and Information

You will need to supply your own overalls and safety boots for practical activities and stationery for classroom work. The course is likely to include trips to tourist attractions and community facilities which will require a contribution to the cost.

In addition, you may require special safety equipment or uniforms for some work experience options. You may be eligible for financial help from the College to help meet these costs.
