Course Overview


This course is ideal for practising and aspiring human resource professionals, who seek to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of the human resources function. The course is designed to give you people management knowledge and skills in particular areas of work. The overall aim is to provide a practical basis on which to build effective people management strategies across a wider range of HR issues.This course is also relevant for business and operational managers who wish to specialise in an HR role and who have some experience and knowledge of Human Resource Management in the workplace. It is also designed for people already in an HR role and who are aiming to progress to a management position in the function or those who have already studied HR at Foundation level. Applications from students who have achieved a relevant qualification at degree level will be also considered. An analytical level of thinking is required along with well-written work.


What will I learn?


The aim of the programme is to progress knowledge and skills from an HR supporting role, into an HR Management role, with some operational and strategic planning responsibility, which will then support the strategic direction of the organisation.

The course is designed to bring theory, concepts and best practice principles together and apply them to workplace situations and scenarios.

• Business issues and the context of human resources
• Using information in human resources
• Managing and co-ordinating the human resources function
• Employee engagement
• Implementing Coaching and mentoring within organisations
• Resourcing and Talent Planning
• Employment Law

Entry Requirements


Candidates will have a good level of education to include English language, verbal and written skills, along with ICT skills such as Microsoft Office. Ideally, you will have studied Human Resources at Level 3, or good experience in a Human Resources role, or studied a related topic at degree level.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications


Though the course is demanding and challenging, it is very achievable. Excellent attendance is essential to maintain the learning momentum and submit assignments on time.

There are no examinations, but there are assignments (one per module). The assignments are important as they confirm that you have the required skills and knowledge for that module. Every assignment must be passed.

The course does require independent research to develop your appreciation of the topics. You should assume that the classroom hours of approximately 5 - 6 per week are matched by an equivalent amount of your own time in reading, preparation for class and writing up assignments.

Courses will run at our Lackham Campus on Tuesday or Thursday, 1.00pm – 5.00pm for 34 weeks.

Additional Costs and Information


All students will have access to the Learning Resource Centre (Library) on our main campuses, this also allows use of personal computers with access to the internet. There is also access to the 24/7 e-Study interactive online learning facility, with a comprehensive range of including books, research studies, reports, workbooks and presentations.

You will also need to join the CIPD as a student member. Please check current details and prices at the time of enrolment.

Students who are already CIPD members do not have to pay any registration or subscription fees to the CIPD. However, those joining the CIPD for the first time, pay a fee for the year. This is made up of a first-time registration fee and a subscription fee - for current prices candidates should contact the CIPD direct and arrange to pay their fees directly to them once the programme has started.
