This beginners course in contemporary jewellery will introduce you to the design and making techniques involved in creating your own beautifully crafted jewellery. The course is delivered over a 10 week period, beginning with an introduction into basic processes which you will then develop into professionally finished pieces at the end of your time in the workshop.
What will I learn?
The aim of the course is to introduce you to the skills and tools that will begin your journey into the world of contemporary jewellery. Over your time in the workshop you will experience working with various materials, tools and equipment to make beautifully crafted pieces of jewellery. This will include demonstrating an ability to confidently use a jewellery torch to anneal and solder metal, apply surface pattern and texture. Show skill in measuring, cutting, bending and shaping metal. All to achieve well thought out designs and wearable items of jewellery.
The following topics will be covered on this course:
Annealing. mark making and texturing metals
Introduction to piercing, to draw and cut out a design
How to use a disc cutter and dombing punch
Introduction to soldering
Shaping jump rings and earring findings
Sizing and forming a sheet metal ring
Making an open and closed bangle
How to shape chain links, form a chain and create clasps
Colouring metals with copper nitrate and patinas
Time to experiment and finish pieces to a professional standard with guidance
There are no entry requirements associated with this course.
Study, Assessment and Qualifications
Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor.
Additional Costs and Information
There are no additional course costs. However learners may wish to be advised on precious materials such as silver for their finished items which can be bought separately or through the lecturer.
You must wear protective footwear within the workshop and we suggest older clothing.
If possible please bring with you:
- Fine tip permanent marker
- Drawing compass
- Small box or container to keep your experiments

On completion of your course you may choose to progress onto these following courses
You may wish to enrol in a further 10 week block of lessons to refine the skills you have learnt. A mixed ability contemporary jewellery workshop is also available, where you will expand upon the skills acquired on this course and be introduced to new materials/techniques and further develop your jewellery designs.
