“By coming to College I’ve found something I love doing and that I’m really good at.”
Laura Kendal said she has thoroughly enjoyed her first year at Wiltshire College & University Centre since starting on the Level 1 Painting & Decorating course last September after completing her GCSEs.
She said she struggled in the school environment but that since starting at the Salisbury campus, has thrived.
Laura, aged 17, said: “I wanted to learn a trade as I like working practically and also liked the idea of flexible working hours.
“The Level 1 course has been perfect to learn basic techniques such as how to hold a paintbrush properly and how to properly remove wallpaper and general preparation.
“Before I started College I had no idea there was such a thing as how to hold a paintbrush correctly!”
Throughout the year-long course, Laura had the opportunity to carry out work experience with Alabare at Old Sarum Development and Garden Centre, where her team leading skills stood out and she supported fellow students, who didn’t initially feel quite so confident. During her placement Laura oversaw repainting the outside of the development centre.
Laura has clear goals for setting up her own business and has already been given work by friends and family.
Laura added: “I think a trade is a fantastic career as you will always be wanted or needed.
“I’ve had quite a bit of work off friends and family so far and I’ve also had requests from women, sometimes more elderly, who say they would feel more comfortable with a female coming into their property.”
At Wiltshire College & University Centre, we offer a wide range of construction courses that are delivered at our Salisbury, Trowbridge and Chippenham courses. All you need to do is to decide, which one if for you!
