Programme Lead, Higher Nationals in Social and Community Work

Meet Leah, programme lead for our Higher National courses in Social and Community Work

After completing an undergraduate Sociology degree at the University of Glasgow, I was awarded Wellcome Trust funding to complete my MA and PhD in the History of Medicine at the University of Exeter.

As an advocate of adult education, I moved from Higher Education to Further Education, completed my PGCE (+16) with the University of Greenwich and have coordinated the Health and Social Care Higher National courses at Wiltshire College & University Centre for the past 5 years.

As an experienced External Examiner for Pearson, I also visit educational settings across the UK to assess the quality of Higher Education health and counselling courses.

About Me

I have the travel bug and love nothing more than packing a rucksack and heading off with my husband and two young children. When I’m not exploring you’ll find me in my wellies tackling the garden or stomping about in the Wiltshire hills.

Areas of Teaching
  • Sociology of Health
  • Research Methodology
  • Contemporary Social Issues
  • Partnership Working
  • Management and Employer Relations in Health and Social Care Settings

My research interests focus on the history of psychiatric disorders and the lived experiences of illness.

Research highlights include leading a service user led project with people living with Tourette Syndrome. Another example involved heading to the remote Botswana panhandle after being awarded funding to collect ‘health life stories’ from people living in an area impacted by Human Elephant Conflict.
